RE: Homestead Life: What We Would Do Differently with 100K at the Onset

How interesting. I wish I had taken more time to pick my land. I just had such a good feeling on the land that I wanted to be there, and felt it wanted me there. And it was in the right region of the area I wanted to be in. But I didn't really think it through in terms of what I would need to live how I want. For one thing there are no trees, so I must plant everything. And the well will be about $20k!

I definitely will set up catchment for irrigation of the garden I'll plant, so that the well water just goes for the household. I also got a place that doesn't allow temp structures unless there is already a 1,000+ sqft main home on the property, so can't do things in that order.

I may wind up having to sell this land in a few years and buy someplace I put more thought into in order to be able to build in an ideal way.

Your region is one of my favorite in the US and I often think about buying land there in the future for a seasonal dwelling I can live in part of the year. However for many of our perennial permaculture dreams, the climate, harsh winters, altitude (hard on our bodies) and lack of rainfall was not suitable. Sadly! The water thing especially is such a difficult aspect for so many homesteading there! Yet the land definitely calls 💙
