Suomieksotiikkaa STNA! – Abandoned Cottage Frozen in Time

in #finland6 years ago (edited)

Suomieksotiikkaa STNA! (roughly translates to Finnish Exotics for fucks sake!) is a series where I show the uglier side of Finland, in the mids of all the beautiful nature. It's a sort of reality check, that it's not all winter wonderlands, lush greens and beautiful lakes in here. It's showing the gritty, old, abandoned, rotten and dirty, but it's also for finding beauty in those too.

Description borrowed from @eveuncovered who came up with the series.

I've done at least one entry to the series and now I have something extraordinarily good for this (instead of shit).

When I was celebrating summer solstice at my friend's cottage, he showed a particular sight nearby: an abandoned cottage that quite literally seems to have frozen in time dozens of years backwards. See the pictures for yourself and you will understand why.

My friend told that this is the picture of the man who used to live in this cottage. The story goes that he just built it with his own hands after World War 2 as a place to live after. Though eventually he died. The strange thing is that all the stuff is just left here. Where did the body go? Somebody had to take it away, since it is not here, right? And if somebody took him and buried him, why that person/they didn't take any of this stuff away?

What makes this all even stranger, is the fact that there are even some old photo albums left.

Could be slightly disturbing for sensitive people, since there were pictures of butchering a lamb.

On the right, you can see a glimpse of a guest book that some other visitor have brought there, so that everyone willing could mark their visit here. In the picture before the previous one there was probably another, older, quest book under the bike picture, though I didn't look.

It seems like the owner would've have some relatives or friends, judging by the pictures, but where did they all go when he died?

All these items lying around – of course it is impossible to tell if something has been taken, but it is sort of incredible that there really is so many authentically old items here despite there having been many other visitors too. But it is rather underground sight, I assume, that is probably not in any public information, but is a local gem that can only be found through the local knowledge – and they clearly respect it. And I really hope it stays, because it's like a time capsule to the past.

That thing on the right side of the picture is a foam extinguisher.

I find the writing on the skull strange (Äkäslompolo 7.8.1963), because Äkäslompolo is a small village in Lapland – hundreds of kilometers away from the cottage's location. But I guess it is not ruled out that the animal, to whomever the skull belonged to (also moose?), was taken down there. Another writing there is "Kari Viljamaa" which is a Finnish name for a man. The owner of the cottage, or the one who killed the animal?

There was even a piece of Maaseudun Tulevaisuus ("the future of countryside") newspaper from a Saturday, 31st of June, 1965.

There was a note above the entrance which is quite funny by the way.

Drinking alcohol in this house
is strictly forbidden, except with seafood.
All food will be counted as seafood
except sausage made with groats.
If against all expectations
sausage made with groats would still be served
may that also be counted as fish.

What a lovely and interesting share! Finnish countryside is full of these ”time capsules”, places and belongings left to dust. The most eery ones for me are when there are those nice porcelain cups and saucers left on the coffee table, just waiting for the afternoon tea that never came.

Thanks, Eve!

Uuu... eerie indeed!

Urbex is one of the subjects I write about, just returned from an abandoned mill 10 minutes ago. This is a bit special though, photographs, and memorabilia are hard to come by at the ones I do. They mostly get vandalised over time or torched.

Yeah, people tend to just shit at everything, so I was happy it wasn't the case here.
