Homeschool Mom of the Year Scam Call - Beware!

source
People continue coming up with clever ways to get personal information. For a number of years someone has been calling homeschool moms claiming to be associated with Focus on the Family (a global Christian ministry dedicated to helping families thrive).
The caller claims you have been nominated for the “Homeschool Mom of the Year” award and then proceeds with seeking out personal information. You may be asked questions about
your household, children and parental techniques.
Here is the official response from Focus on the Family:
It seems this person has been sporadically calling moms, primarily those who homeschool, for a number of years. She often states she has worked in collaboration with Focus. Apparently, she especially likes to discuss issues related to discipline, and will often say that the recipient of the call has won a prize, such as a “Homeschooling Mother of the Year” award.
As you may have surmised, this person is an imposter. This person has never been associated with Focus on the Family as far as our records show. And though the FBI has been alerted to this situation, unfortunately, the individual hasn’t been identified. Various phone numbers have been used over time, and it hasn’t been possible to locate the person making the calls.
To this point, we are unaware of any attempts by this person to seek or collect personal information for the purposes of a scam or to defraud those she calls. However, if you should receive a call which seems to have this intent, please let us know by calling 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459). And even if this is not the case, you may wish to notify authorities that you received a harassing phone call. If you receive another call from her, we’d encourage you to hang up immediately.
Although this person has not been identified and her true intentions have yet to be revealed, I couldn’t help to first think this sounds like something the CPS would coerce. All of this personal information being gathered about families and their household and how they discipline their children could be used against them. What other reason would someone falsely be seeking this type of information? Especially when it comes to homeschooling families which we know are targeted. This is just a guess, my own personal opinion that the CPS could possibly be behind these scam calls. I am a firm believer that they intentionally seek out families to separate and destroy because it’s a money making business rather than an honest family help system.
Here are some recommended steps to take given my Midwest Parent Educators should you ever receive this call:
• Do not give any information away. The caller may pretend to be a fellow homeschool mom and ask seemingly innocent questions. Just remember that they are probably trying to get you to say something to use against you or fellow homeschoolers.
• Try to take notes. If the caller reveals any information during the call, try to record the conversation as much as possible. It will come in handy when you file a police report.
• Notify HSLDA. It’s always a good idea to call the Home School Legal Defense Association with any concerns you may have.
Whether this is a CPS scam or not it’s still a good idea to take precaution. We know there is no such thing as the “Homeschool Mom of the Year” award given by Focus on the Family. Someone is out there gathering up information for a reason.
I thought awareness on this was needed. Someone may get the call and think
well my homeschool is private and not listed
and will automatically know the call is a fake. Yet others may have family and friends that know they are homeschooling and could have nominated them. This could easily throw them off guard and cause them to fall into the trap of giving out personal information to a scammer.
I hope this was informative and can possibly prevent people from being fooled.

The fact that they have knowledge that the person they're calling is a homeschooler is very suspicious. I'd assume that information is not available to just anyone? Surely this would indicate that it's someone who has access to that information.
Yes exactly! Some homeschooling families live in areas that do not require them to register their school. So for those that are not listed it is very suspicious.
We do not discuss our parenting with any unknown persons.
