Introduction.

We, the parents, who make our lives in the chain of blocks, have the enormous and great responsibility of guiding our children in one of the most typical and inescapable tasks they have, as is the determination of their vocation.

It is a long and slow process by virtue of which children, especially in adolescence, identify with a professional image with which they feel comfortable.

However, due to the lack of experience and perspective of young people, it is propitious that the adult world or rather parents, we can positively influence this issue of vocation.

In this sense, the present study will focus on "The role of parents in the vocation of children".

A situation to be considered by parents:

Javier is in his last year of high school and, finally, he has decided to study for a civil engineer. As before I wanted to study computer science and some months later, for agronomist, his parents are already a little tired of listening to the changes ... They still use jokes to remember what they wanted to be a few years before: first policeman, then fireman, and during a long time: doctor.
Now, however, the options are becoming more concrete and are being defined by engineering. Then comes the problem of the minimum qualification needed to enter the faculty or university school you have chosen. If, in spite of everything, you can register, you must continue choosing several paths of academic specialization and then work.

If we evaluate the situation, we discover that it is very similar, that we, the parents of the chain of blocks, have had to face at some point with our children, guide them and help them make the final decision of a career that is in accordance with their vocation.

How can I help in the vocation of my children?

Based on my experience as a parent and educator, along with the fundamental contributions of the specialists, some aspects can be considered in which parents can play an important role in the lives of their children in terms of their vocation.

The lifestyle of parents plays a decisive role in the vocational choice of their children.

The lifestyle (values, principles, attitudes and practices) of us, the parents, plays a decisive role in the vocational choice of our children. For example, if a family has always exalted the values of service and self-denial, children are likely to be inclined towards professions and activities in which those values are well considered.

Parents should remain open to other possibilities of vocational choice of their children.

It is important that parents consider that, in spite of everything, there are many cases in which children make professional decisions very different from what we, the parents, would have liked. Therefore, the best advice, in this situation, is that parents, although they have the right to recommend what they believe best for their children, remain open to other possibilities that may also be valid.

What can parents do as their children's vocation develops?

Parents can talk with their children about the advantages and disadvantages of the professions they are in: the doctor they go to in case of illness, the mechanic who repairs the car, the employee of the bank that attends them for a loan problem o The tax expert, who advises them on taxes.

What benefit can parents gain from the professions that appear in movies and television series?

Parents can do a good job of demystifying professions that appear in movies and television series. For example, the detective in the movie is completely different from the real-life detective.

Teaching young people to observe their surroundings with a critical eye is perhaps the best vocational influence that parents can exercise.

In more technical aspects, parents can go with their children to the specialists to obtain professional guidance.

With regard to the more technical aspects of the orientation towards studies or types of employment, parents can take their son to a psychologist to obtain professional guidance. There are psychologists in schools, in some public services or in the private sector. The consultation consists of an interview and the performance of several psychological tests designed for this purpose. Finally, the psychologist offers an orientation based on the intellectual level, skills, interests, preferences and personality of the interviewee.
