How Organic Is Organic?
We all know how important organic food is, there's no need to write a whole post about it. How you get your organic food is on the other hand another matter.
If you go to the supermarket, you have two choices: regular or organic. Organic costs twice or three time as the other fruits and vegetables and forgive me for saying but half of the products taste horrible, have nothing to do with the real ones.
If you have a garden, you can grow some of your fruits, vegetables and spices yourself but not everyone is so lucky. Even if you have a garden, you can't grow everything due to the weather or just because the soil is not the proper one for what you want to grow.
So what's the best solution? You go to the farmers market (if you have one near where you live). This seems to be the best solution, but is it really the best solution? Can you trust the vendors?
If you ask me, I'm a bit skeptical about this matter because I've seen quite a lot and I know how people are. It was in August I think when I heard an interview on the radio, it was a nutritionist talking about how important is to eat right and how to choose your fruits and vegetables.
The woman said it's best to eat homegrown fruits and vegetables and if you don't have the possibility to do that, buy from trusted source. Then she told her story to the audience about how how much you can trust vendors at the farmers market. She had a vendor she used to buy from, a trusted source, the woman always told her she's not using pesticides and her products were always fresh. One day the nutritionist went to the seed shop to buy some seeds and there it was her farmers market vendor buying pesticides. She confronted the woman who seemed to be ok with her lie, she said this is life.
Unfortunately this is not the only case, vendors would tell you what you want to hear. Once I wanted to buy some sweet corn. It's called sweet corn and there are many types. I'm used to those that are not so sweet but unfortunately the market is flooded with the most sweet type which I don't like. Each label says sweet, so one day I asked a vendor how sweet the cor is. He said it's very sweet, the best I can get around here. Then I said thank you, I'm not looking for sweet ones. Guess what was his answer? He said it's not so sweet, I can buy it because it's perfect for me. Of course it is! :) Everything is for sale, right?
So what's the best solution:
- Buy organic from the supermarket?
- Trust the farmers market vendors?
- Not care about if it's organic or not?

Here buying from farmers cost way more than supermarket... and supermarket is pricey... Organic/non gmo will always cost more, tell me about it! I buy all organic/non gmo cause I'm allergic to gmo. Actually that's the way I know if something is not 100% gmo free... if I get rash in my face means it wasn't organic haaa
I know it's not an easy task to find the right healthy food for the right price.
I guess is the same in every country... but also i think is more difficult to have organic stuff cause they can't use pesticides and all that stuff so they lose some of the crops to the insects. Health cost and eye ahahah
You're right, when you can't use pesticides, you have to destroy the infected parts and it's not easy, I know that first hand. And yes, health costs a lot but it's better than to treat diseases.
Many thanks.

If you have just a little bit of land, or can deal with some pots, you can grow your own vegetables. Start with only a few. I've been doing that with no pesticides of any kind, and no previous experience at all. I get to eat them by season, and they taste great. Most of all, it FEELS great to do it. Is a beautiful and relaxing hobby. Friends that visit my house love doing the tour through the backyard (I have 40+ different plants) and they appreciate getting some freshly cut vegetables and spices back home.
Eating something you've grown is so rewarding. Give it a try! Start with something simple like lettuce or arugula. Or spices, like oregano, rosemary, mint. Its easy, its fun, and it'll open your mind to a whole new and interesting world. At the very least, you'll get more appreciation for fruits, vegetables and spices, and you'll eat more of them, and more variety as well.
I'm one of the lucky ones, my dad has a big garden and we grow lots of vegetables and fruits which are then prepared for winter, canned, frozen, you name it. Plus we go foraging as some of our neighbors are lazy and don't care about fruits growing on their land. Last year we picked 14 kg of plums, fresh, organic, never treated with anything. I made more than 240 jars of jam alone, not to mention pickles and other products for the whole family :)
So I fully agree with you. I'm growing spices on my balcony, to have them fresh when I'm cooking. With a little bit of effort one can have many fresh things. These things can be learned quickly, it's not rocket science.
Thank you for the nice comment and support and have a nice day :)
