Some days are just harder than others
This will be a sad story, just as a heads up. Several years ago, I adopted three geese and a duck from my friend's neighbor. They were moving to Nevada and didn't want to take water birds with them. The duck was raised with the geese and absolutely believes he's a goose. He chases away any of the male ducks or roosters if they get near his ladies, even though his ladies outweigh him by at least 20 pounds and don't really need protecting. He is very committed.
Yesterday when I was moving the goat fence, I noticed Goose Duck (sometimes the naming gets really literal and not very creative) was sitting on the edge of the old concrete cistern. During the winter, the cistern is full of water and spills over into a little pond. This time of year, it's only about half full and everybody avoids it. The usual course of action is to put the sump pump in the cistern and drain it, so we can clean out all the debris and make it less gross and less attractive to the birds. We hadn't done it yet this year. I was curious about why he was sitting there and went over to take a look. In the cistern were one of the geese and a duck, both dead. We fished them out and laid them on the ground, feeling really guilty that we hadn't drained the water soon enough. They must have gone in for a little swim and not been able to fly back out, since the walls are too narrow. Goose Duck sat down with his lady friend and gently pecked at her head, trying to get her to wake up.
Most of the ducks don't have names, since we can't really tell them apart, but the geese do, and this one was Popeye. She injured one of her eyes somehow not long after she moved here, and lost it. She managed to avoid all manner of other dangers while only being able to see out of one side of her head, but somehow this got her.
As if the situation wasn't heartbreaking enough, Goose Duck would not leave her. We let him sit with her the rest of the day, thinking maybe he needed to say goodbye. He didn't come down to dinner last night, and I didn't insist. When I got up this morning, he was still there, sitting Shiva for his lost friend.
Today my son and I went up and put both the dead birds in a paper feed bag and carried them out to the back field to bury them. Sometimes we will burn dead birds, but we didn't think a thirty pound goose who had been soaking in water would be a good candidate for cremation, so we went the more traditional route.
We buried them in a thunderstorm, which is a very rare event around here. It's still thundering as I'm writing this, and all the dogs are nervous.
I went back up to the cistern quite a while after the little funeral, and poor Goose Duck is still sitting where his friend had been. I have seen a lot of crazy things since beginning the farming journey, but I had never seen a duck grieve. It is breaking my heart to see him. He still has two other geese to take care of, but he can't let go of this one.
I promised myself I wouldn't cry over the goose, but it's the duck that broke me.
What a wonderfully loyal friend. He made me cry, too.
I am very sad to read about this incident ! it's sad. You have shown a very touching story. Birds and animals very often show us, people, examples a real devotion and fealty. I feel sorry for him. I hope that he will be able to recover from this bitter loss. In our family there are three pet cats and I can often see how they are sincere and simple in the relationship. They do not know how to pretend and deceive. Their feelings and emotions are very sincere. We humans could learn a lot from them. I see that You are a very caring owner and Your Pets are sure to have a happy life.
I learn so much from my animals. Their relationships are so uncomplicated compared with human ones. I am constantly surprised and touched by the love they have for each other.

Aww.. what a unfortunate incident. I hope the duck moves on after some grieving.
I hope so too. He's still really upset.

This is so sad! Animals have feelings too and he miss his dear friend :(
He's still sad! He slept on the spot we took her from yesterday. He just can't let her go.

Oh! I hope they are reincarnated into a much better life! You’ll have to tell the duck that he could meet them in the next life!
In my defense, they did have a pretty good life, even if it wasn't as long as I would have wanted. I will definitely tell the duck to look out for them. He will be so happy!

‘To have a better life’ is a kind of blessing we say for dead pets and animals
which means we want them to be reincarnated as human beings so that they’ll have the opportunity of becoming enlightened. Animals cannot practice Dhamma, so human beings have big advantage!
Sometimes I wonder if the animals aren't better off than we are. Their lives are so uncomplicated compared with ours. We make things so messy.

Awww, poor Goose-Duck! Love the photo of him sitting on the dog, though. Would it help to put a screen over top of that cistern? It would probably just turn into the perfect mosquito breeding ground.
You might appreciate this photo of the pelicans I took last summer. Look closely at the left side and you'll see Pelican-Duck. He's seriously out-beaked.
It would definitely help to cover it. I have tried several times with no luck. I will have to build something and figure out how to attach it. It is a major mosquito incubator! We put mosquito dunks in it to help with that. When there's still enough water for the birds to play in it, they take care of most of the larvae.

I can understand that. Sometimes I think living a life that is full of caring for creatures you love is the best life there is, why doesn't everyone want to do that, and then one of them dies. I've had a dog be clearly depressed after the passing of another dog, and cats clearly mourning another cat, but the chickens seem not to notice at all except for the pecking order switch ups. I've never had ducks though. This makes me want to get some. Such loyalty!
I've never seen a duck behave this way. The only thing I can think of is that he thinks he's a goose and geese are loyal. That's what makes the whole thing so strange and tragic!

And interesting! Compassion can be learned, even by a duck, you just have to hang around it a lot.
I have learned so much from my animals! Even the ones that are supposed to be dumb. Even the dumb ones know more than I do.
