Worst Call Ever Sparks Weirdest Question Ever?
Now that I am old with a wife, kids and a million other responsibilities, I don't get to just hang out in bars and argue about sports. One of the things I like most about blogging is that it can be the next best thing to those old bar stool debates. One of my favorite tings to do while drinking a bourbon and trying to balance my wobbly bar stool is to toss out a question for my buddies and I to argue. Sometimes the questions are intentionally loony.
Well blockchain buddies... here's a crazy question.

Wait. You can't see the ball. Oh that is because it is not there yet.
Alright I lied, the question will be posed in a minute. Before I do, let me establish the background for it.
After my Bears and Chargers were knocked out of the playoffs (both in incredibly frustrating fashion) all I really cared about was not seeing New England win... again. As a result, I did not care at all about the Rams vs Saints game. I like Drew Brees so it would be cool to see him compete for another title. However, I also think a 32 year old wunderkind coach is a pretty cool story so I would have been fine with the Rams representing the NFC as well. Long story short, I didn't have a dog in the fight. I just wanted to see an exciting game.
And it was incredibly exciting... until that terrible no call with 1:45 left to play. My question is not going to be "Is that the worst mistake you have ever seen a referee make?" That is pointless. Although there may be some calls equally as bad, I can't imagine any are actually worse. I know Saints fans will never be convinced otherwise. I won't even ask if that was the worst blunder in the biggest spot in the history of sports. Again that is relative.

All that matters for the purpose of this exercise is that pretty much everyone universally agrees that the refs completely screwed the pooch by not calling either penalty committed by Rams DB Nickell Robey-Coleman. If you were thinking of arguing that it was not a terrible mistake, please save your breath (or your fingers in this case). After the game, Robey-Coleman himself said:
"Ah, hell yeah, that was PI"
"I came to the sidelines, looked at the football gods and said, ‘Thank you, football gods. Thank you.’"
If that isn't enough, there is an article full of quotes here.
The fact that it was such a terrible call left me feeling hollow. Instead of being blown away by ice water pulsing through the veins of Greg Zuerlein as he drilled a 57 yard field goal in OT to send his team to the Super Bowl, I slumped on my couch, shrugged my shoulders and thought, "That should never have happened. I feel bad for the Saints. This isn't fair at all."
I realize the game is 60 minutes long and the Saints had plenty of opportunities to win the game. But they pretty much did. It just wasn't acknowledged. I don't even want to argue that point. If someone argued that the Rams deserved to go because calls are part of the game, I'd have no legs to stand on. So that argument is no fun.
But how about this...
The referees immediately knew they blew that call. They were being booed mercilessly by a very loud hometown crowd (and rightfully so). I bet they wish they could have done anything to fix it. Unfortunately the rules don't allow. At least the official rules that is.
Before proceeding, it is important to note that the referees can probably call a penalty on either team on every single play of the game.
Although no where in the NFL rule book will you find a section titled "Make Up Calls"... we all know they exist (just like "Code Reds" aren't in the Marine handbook... just ask Tom Cruise... if you can handle the truth.) So if make up calls really do exist, should Sean Payton have given the referees a chance to fix their mistake?

With the score tied at 20 with 1:45 minutes left in the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship game, do you think Sean Payton would have been smart to go for it on 4th and 10 from the Rams 13 yard line? Although ridiculously bold (and possibly insane) there is a great possibility that one of the following three things would have happened on that play (assuming it were a pass).
The Saints score a TD on a successful pass to the endzone.
The Saints receivers curl out of the endzone and pick up a 1st down inside the 3 yard line.
The refs save face and call any of the following on the Rams: Defensive Holding, Pass Interference, Roughing the Passer, Hitting a Defenseless Receiver... or one of the myriad of other calls that make it impossible to play pass defense now.
Would you gamble your season on the idea that the refs were so desperate to fix their mistake that you were guaranteed a first down?
Great question. As stated we do know that refs issue make up calls all of the time. I vaguely recall a referee being caught on an open mic in an NBA game. He told the coach that they blew it and would make it up to him. It would not have occured to me to see if I could get a make up call in that moment. However, I am a true river boat gambler and probably would have gone for it anyway. Win or go home. And yes, the Chargers defeat was incredibly disappointing. I currently do not have a pro football team. Since I actually live in Carson, I was low key rooting for Rivers and his crew.
There was also the situation where my favorite wrestler was hit on the head by a folding chair while the referee completely had his effing back turned. Never take your eyes off of match ref.
Haaa
That is the worst. How about where they load up their boot and then kick them right in the abdomen!?
And how many foreign objects does a guy need to rake across another guy's eyes before they call something.
Shenanigans!!!
The fix was in, the two biggest TV market share teams won, naive to think big business sports isn't fixed, not to mention the LA market is trying to increase interest right before they start selling season tickets to their new ballpark.....
It is honestly tough to argue with you. I believe the NBA is absolutely fixed... so why not football too?
NBA fixed, agreed!
In the late 1980's I knew a guy who was a professional gambler. Back in the day the point spread used to be published in the newspapers. One day he took the paper and went through all of the games and the spreads. He bascially told me how each game was going to play out. It went pretty much like he said. He explained to me it was never about dunks and 3 pointers. It was always about free throws and how the refs called the game. Mind you this was way before Donaghy. He told me to notice when a team is up big late and the starters have been pulled. If the other team makes a late run an then the other team puts the starters back in they are playing the spread. They are not in danger of losing the game, it is about the spread. Or when a football team kicks a late meaningless field goal? They are playing the spread. In 1990 the NCAA was going to take down Tarkanian and the Rebels. He told me that Vegas was going to win the tournament. However, that Vegas would be even better the following season and would not be allowed to win. After winning, the NCAA stated that Vegas was going to be put on probation. However they were going to allow Vegas to defend their title and go on probation the following season. They stated that and be placed on probabtion the season after next. When they did that, we knew the fix was in. They could not let Vegas go undefeated and sit out the tournament. Because whoever won, everyone would have said "yeah, but you did not beat Vegas."
Hey man. If NFL refs got you down, don't miss this hit: instant replay link. Just trying to keep the comedy alive around here.
I apologize. I am walking to work in a snow shower, so I am unable to look this up right now. But there was a perfect game pitched a number of years ago where the umpire blew the call by half a step on the very last out. The Umpire even apologized to the pitcher later. That was pretty ugly.
Armando Gallaraga had his legacy destroyed by Jim Joyce.

Armando Galarraga's near-perfect game
In a Major League Baseball game played on June 2, 2010, at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga nearly became the 21st pitcher in Major League history to throw a perfect game. Facing the Cleveland Indians, Galarraga retired the first 26 batters he faced, but his bid for a perfect game was ruined one out short when first base umpire Jim Joyce incorrectly ruled that Indians batter Jason Donald reached first base safely on a ground ball. Galarraga instead finished with a one-hit shutout in a 3–0 victory. He faced 28 batters and threw 88 pitches (67 strikes and 21 balls), striking out three.
Oh, I have no answer to your question and no consolation to your sadness, my friend! As a sports fan, I know that the ball is round and that the team wins only when the game is over. I've seen games where referees deserve a huge boo and get the rules out of them. Sometimes it's the team coaches who do the rookie bullshit. I remember one time in a baseball game that one of the referees blocked one of the bases and the player couldn't touch it. Inept and sold referee, he was told from the bars. On another occasion, in a game between Barcelona and Madrid, a referee whistled every time out of place, legal plays. So much so that the other referees had to meet with him and draw his attention. Then he justified himself with the fact that he had been medicated. Jesus Christ! In sport we can find everything!
It clearly happens all the time.
@hanshotfirst, When referee gives a decision, most of the times Referee becomes best buddy for the favoured team for that moment and in the eyes of unfavoured team referee becomes biggest enemy for that moment. Ha ha. Stay blessed. 🙂
It sure is a way to get 75,000 fans to boo you lol.
Yes, Ha ha 📣
