Thoughts on Palcoin, Decentralization, and the Non-Aggression Principle

What do these words on our logo mean??

So, what does this mean exactly?
I have found that many people in crypto seem to be for a decentralized society without government.
The question I always put forth to those who feel this way is "What happens in a decentralized society when there is a bad actor?"
If there aren't any governing laws then how do you deal with those who cause harm to others?
The answer is that the community comes together to deal with it.
The Non-Aggression Principle is peaceful....but not pacifist.
In the Palnet commmunity, we are constantly trying to balance the ideals of Peace, Abundance, and Liberty.
These are not just "words" to us. They are ideals that we attempt to live by.
There are times when people overstep liberties, crossing over other's boundaries, and negatively impact peace and/or abundance.
I think some people just shout "Liberty!" without considering the fact that others have the right to defend themselves when they are being imposed upon.
And these same people get upset when others cross over their own boundaries and their own peace and/or abundance is infringed upon.
We may be free to do what we want, but we are not free from the consequences of our actions.
In my view, the first step should always be de-escalation in hopes of finding a peaceful resolution.
Unfortunately, a peaceful resolution is not always found.
In the Palnet community, our intent is to do no harm, but if someone is hurting others....then we take no shit.

Decentralization
We've heard some complaints that Palnet is not decentralized.
Allow me to make some comparisons:
Palnet is a secondary layer protocol on top of the Steem Blockchain.
We are PART of the Steem Blockchain and the Steem Witnesses are OUR witnesses.
We are a community open to all offering a token that you can earn whilst simultaneously earning Steem.
Palnet is a group of individuals with a large stake with the intent of helping others through curating great content.
We do not upvote ourselves with this stake.
And we are not powering down our stake to sell.
Steem has large stakeholders, many of which sell their votes to bid bots or do not have the time to curate great content.
Our initial Palnet distribution is already designed to hold less percent of the stake than Steemit Inc.
After 3 years of dumping, Steemit Inc still holds over half of the overall stake spread around their accounts.
Palnet only started with 20% spread among way more people:
- 10% on whitelisted accounts via a claimdrop
- 10% to moderators over the first year
The argument by some is that Palnet is not decentralized due to the fact that it is a community started by a group of individuals.
It seems to me though that people love the idea of decentralization.....until they don't. lol
With decentralization people complain about rampant abuse on Steemit....they complain about the rewards.....they complain that positive steps to help are not implemented quickly enough....or at all.
When people actually start organizing with the intent to accomplish something then people cry that it isn't decentralized...then nothing gets done.
Also, it is said that hard forks basically come from Steemit Inc. anyway and the top 20 witnesses are encouraged to go along.
That isn't exactly decentralized.
Those that complain about decentralization may not like the set up of Palnet, but to put it bluntly.....we are getting shit done.
When the community doesn't like something, we fix it.
If there are abusive actors in the community we mute so they WON'T CAUSE HARM....because we take no shit.
Do no harm
Take no shit
I have found that many people are grateful that we are willing to directly handle abuse and the complaints have been minimal.
I would also like to clarify that we have no way to control stake either, if we remove someone from the community, they still own their stake and are free to power down.
While our community is open to all, we will protect the members of our community under the ideals of Peace, Abundance, and Liberty.
It is important to remember that this is all voluntary. You are not required to be a member of our community.
And you are not required to use the palnet tag or palnet.io.
That being said, I hope that you do.
This kind of thinking sounds very NEW STEEM!
Yes!

ALL THE THIS TO THE MAX ON A SKATEBOARD DOING 720s WHILE EATING ICE CREAM.
lol....yes!
We may be free to do what we want, but we are not free from the consequences of our actions
This cannot be stressed enough.
be free, be good, but, be responsible.
Doesn't seem complicated, yet it is to so many.
Do no harm
Take no shit
ALL THE THIS. Keep palnet from becoming spammy troll infighting nonsense. I got caught up in it completely inadvertently by trying to (gasp) make friends in the new PALnet community. I posted (after actually reading ... double gasp) on @swelker101 's post a few days ago and somehow received a pile of downvotes from two connected accounts.... downvotes that spread their way into my own posts and comment sections and resulted in random people getting downvoted and very confused. Keep this shit the fuck out of my Steemit and PAL life. I'm hustling my ass off to make content exclusively for the platform ... the last thing I, or worse somebody new to the platform, need is to be demoralized by unstable troll people. It's the internet, and granted, some of that comes with the space .... but part of what makes PAL a fresh start and so much more exciting to curate is the ABSENCE of these people, bot networks, whales posting nonsense and other whales upvoting it. BLEH. Steem 1.0, we barely knew ya.
So yeah feel free to make anybody aggressively damaging the ecosystem totes absent. Curation is intrinsically impartial, so cool and wise heads making judgements on who is poison is FINE BY ME.
Exactly!!! Couldn't have said it better myself. Sorry you had to deal with the crazy downvoting person. It seems to be his goal to downvote everyone on Steemit.
They want decentralization, yet take no steps or make any effort to fix what they see as wrong, instead they rely on a Centralized company to fix the problem. The code for fixing the problems that people complain about come from a centralized company. then a group of people that are supposedly not part of that company decide if they think the solutions are to problems that need fixing. Very few of the screamed for Fixes come from non-company personnel.
PALNet is trying something different. I support what the individuals behind PALNet are accomplishing.
Exactly, you are completely right, I was feeling the same about what we should do when someone is hurting everyone and there should be a way to stop that person which you described it so well.
I would add an example: a class without teacher or a school without master wont work the way it has to, nobody's there to manage, so there always needs some people to care about the situation and problems, only they have to be those who deserve to be in a position.

Hi @isaria
May I ask you a question related to PALnet?
If I staked PAL already, then how could I delegate it to someone else? Is it even possible?
Yours
Piotr
I don't even know why you have to defend yourselves.
The fact that anyone can hop onto Discord and contribute to the PAL 'code of ethics' means that it is decentralized.
It seems to me that PAL is lot more decentralised than Steem, or anything else on the internet for that matter.
I agree :)
Hell ya, New Steem is awesome. You guys are all doing an awesome job!
Dear @isaria
Interesting choice of topic. However I'm wonderinf if you're not to positive about some issues:
That's indeed an excellent question. Unfortunatelly community will not come together to deal with it. I know we would love to believe in it, but that simply won't happen.
Decentralization is allowing to create local "warlords" and smaller groups of power, who would mostly abuse that power for their own benefits. Decentralization won't change human mindset.
Obviously in small communities with centralized authorities (PALnet is such a place) we don't have to really worry much about such abuses. However it is important to realize, that neither Steemit or Palnet is even remotely decentralized and I don't think it ever will be. But then, it's just my own impression.
And I wouldn't see it as a complaining. After all decentralization is currently nothing but fancy and popular term. But full decentralization is as bad (or even worse) than centralization. It's important to find a balance and PALnet is doing quite fine so far.
Again, good read.
Yours
Piotr
I agree
anyone who has been paying attention to the HF21 can't really say that Steemit Inc creates the HFs and then the witnesses approve.
From my understanding the SPS while the building of was paid for by Steemit Inc, it was built by a witness. The witnesses decided on how it is being funded.
The EIP was endorsed by Steemit Inc with the recommendation that it be discussed and included in a future HF. The witnesses want it in this one even in the face of a lot of community opposition.
The witnesses wanted the change from 15 minutes to 1 minute on the reverse auction window. Steemit Inc recommended against it.
Sounds to me like the witnesses are in charge.
True, this Hardfork is different which is a good thing.
Steemit inc still holds over 50% of the total steem though which does not look good from a decentralized perspective.
Neither does the top 20 rarely changing due to large stakeholders keeping them in place. That ends up forming a centralized governance.
