Spring Growth: Green in the Gardens - New and Returning Herbs, Fruits, and Veggies

in #garden6 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemians, it's already feeling like summer up here in Ontario. After all the spring rain it's looking like full sun for the next few days. Lots of new and returning growth in the gardens around the cabin.

Dill

As you can see, i over seeded the dill - it filled in explosively.

Horseradish

The horseradish that i planted last year is in bloom now, and the other horseradish i had planted - where all the dill is - has finally started to pop up, it must have been too late in the season for it last year. Horseradish (root) is well known for being in cocktail sauce, it has a nice spice to it.

Chives, Green Onions, and Peas

In the small terrace garden up the hill, i planted chives and green onions along the edge, peas in the center rows.

Below is a closeup of the chives, the green (or bunching) onions at this stage look very similar to the chives but will grow much fatter. The peas i soaked for 48 hours so they had already popped before i put them in the ground.

Wild Strawberries

This will be the third summer for the Wild Strawberry garden bed, they're the first fruits from the gardens, in a few more days the first ones will ripen, tasty.

Check out the Wild Strawberries Harvest and Propagation from last summer.

Canadian Strawberry Rhubarb

I planted the Canadian Strawberry Rhubarb last year - Rhubarb Planted - it's in bloom now. My aunt said to cut off the bloom because it makes the when it's in bloom the rhubarb has a woody texture to it. The perennial rhubarb is one of the first veggies you see at farmers markets, most rhubarb gets too woody to harvest after spring, but this Strawberry Rhubarb variety can be harvested all summer long (as long as it's not in bloom). I want to plant a full row for a large early harvest next spring. Note: Rhubarb leaves are poisonus, only the stem is eaten.

Thyme

Tough little perennial herb, Thyme keeps on ticking (into the future).

Lavender & Sage

The Lavender and Sage perennial herbs made a solid return after their first winter.

Lavender has that nice smell to it.

Sage has many culinary, medicinal, and ceremonial uses.

Oregano

The Oregano is slowly starting to re-grow from the winter - this was the Oregano Harvest from last summer. Medicinal and culinary uses - tomato sauce is what i use it for most, it does make a tasty and soothing winter tea.

Marjoram (Wild Oregano)

Marjoram, also known as Wild Oregano, is springing forward much quicker than it's cultivated cousin Oregano, Oregano's been too pampered for this impressive early spring growth.

Mint

Mint is always the vigorous grower, i knew it would be up already - many culinary, and therapeutic uses with mint.

Headband

Buddy started this Headband medicinal herb early - i've got to get this one in the ground, it's about to take off. Note: Headband herb may be restricted in some locations

Black Raspberries

After cutting down a large tree, these hill side Black Raspberries have been filling in nicely.

They don't give fruit until the middle of the summer usually, but they seem to be off to a head start this with the removal of their shade tree.

*More veggies on the way - cherry tomatoes, lettuce varieties, greens, root veggies, beans, etc. *

Floor on House Build

I haven't spent as much time on the garden this year, i've been getting ready to build our house at the top of the valley - you can see in the picture below that the foundation and floor has been completed, this week i'll be framing, next week putting the roof on and wrapping.
