Wednesday walk: My visit to see the white Chedi by the river,
During my journey on the river bus, I often noticed this high white Chedi or Pagoda by the river. But I never had the chance to visit this temple. Then, I saw a poster telling us about a festival at this old temple. So, I had no excuse not to visit this temple.
This temple sits right by the river on the opposite side of Bangkok, called Thonburi which was the short lived capital of Siam before the capital was moved to Bangkok on the other side of Chao Phraya River. The best way was to take a bus to cross the bridge then I had to walk about 400 meters from the bus stop to the temple.
People on the bus enjoyed the river view while those at the bus stop were glad their bus had arrived at last.
I had to walk under the bridge towards the river whilst aiming for the white Chedi. My walk was quite rewarding as I could be close to the river.
The temple was having a weekend celebration for the 191 year’s anniversary. People often call the temple by a shorter name of Wat Prayoon, but the full name is Wat Prayurawongsawas Vorawihan which was built(in 1828) by the important feudal lord who was responsible for the King’s treasury. The construction of the white Chedi started during the reign of King Rama III and finished later in the reign of King Rama IV.
The white Pagoda formal name is Phra Mahathat Chedi with the height of 69.525 meters, with round shape and its circumference measures 162 meters, the diameter is 50 meters. It is customary to place the Buddha relics at the top of the Chedi which represents the highest spot suitable for placing highly respected religious objects. So, Buddhists would flock to temples with old Chedi to pay respect to the Buddha relics and asked for blessings on special religious days such as full moon days or Buddhist holy days.
The white Chedi suffered from a lightening and badly damaged in 1871; it was not repaired for 47 years. In 1907, the temple’s abbot finished the repair and renovation of the Chedi and placed the first Buddha relics inside the top. This historical fact was completely forgotten by people until it had been discovered one hundred years later in 2007. A new abbot wanted to put his newly acquired Buddha relics from Ceylon inside the white Chedi.
This created a new opportunity to renovate the old Chedi which had started to be tilted on one side. The renovation had taken over five years with success; they were able to preserve the old Chedi and kept all the original architectural structure while straightened the top part of the damaged Chedi. This major project had made this temple very famous as the UNESCO gave the temple the Award of Excellence in 2013 with the first price among 47 historical renovation projects around the world. What they found inside the delipidated Chedi was a huge surprise which had resulted into a museum at Wat Prayurawongs.
This is inside the renovated white Chedi. There are two narrow and steep staircases leading into the Chedi.
Wishing you a very productive week.
Cheers.

No! It’s mostly okay now! The sky is blue and the wind is strong! Just don’t go to the dusty areas full of condos construction.
Wearing masks is good because lots of people are having influenza!
