Evening Swim at Wreck Beach (Rimel, Bizerte)
Hello Steemians,
This week I had the chance to enjoy a unique summer evening at Wreck Beach (Plage des Épaves) in Rimel, Bizerte.
The name “Épaves” means “wrecks”, and for good reason. The place is famous for the Togolese cargo ship stranded on the shore, which has become both a landmark and a symbol of the area.
I’d like to take you through that evening: the wreck’s story, our little camping spot, swimming with the wreck behind me, and the golden sunset that made it unforgettable.
The Wreck Story
In December 2019, an 84 meter long Togolese cargo ship ran aground here during heavy storms.
Onboard were 10 sailors (6 Indians, 2 Egyptians, and 2 Syrians). Fortunately, all were rescued safely, but the ship never moved again.
Now, almost six years later, the wreck remains on the coast, rusting and weathered, yet strangely majestic a silent witness of the sea’s power.

Our Setup Between the Rocks
We picked a sheltered corner between the rocks, where we set up two parasols, beach chairs, and a cooler packed with snacks. Masks, snorkels, and flippers were ready for some exploration.
It felt like our own little base camp for the evening.

Swimming Beside the Wreck
Floating in the water with the wreck towering behind me was one of the most surreal parts of the evening.
There’s something powerful about swimming in front of a massive ship that once crossed oceans and now rests silent, half-swallowed by the sea.

Sunset Magic
As evening fell, the horizon turned gold. The sun sank into the water, painting the sky with shades of orange and red.
The reflection on the calm sea, combined with the silhouette of the wreck, made the whole moment unforgettable.

Evening Swim Vibes
Of course, I couldn’t resist one last swim as the sun dipped below the horizon. The water felt calm, cool, and endless, the perfect way to close the day.

Final Thoughts
This evening at Wreck Beach was not just about swimming or relaxing it was about feeling connected with nature, history, and the sea’s endless mystery.
If we have the chance to return, our plan is to explore inside the wreck and bring you a full adventure post about it. Stay tuned.
Thank you for reading!
