Being Cheap May Cost You More - A mimismartypants story
Hey Steemians,
So my speciality is SEO but I've been around the block for a while now and figured I know enough to do a few simple site builds. Which I do. Basic WordPress customisation, a little CSS and some tech support know how. Despite me having the host provider on speed dial, I have been doing pretty good I'd say.
The way I see it
Customization is the easy part. Loading the content is the tedious part. And deploying to live is usually pretty simple. But for the first time I've had to deal with a new host provider, my clients host of choice might me cheap, but they suck balls! The most shrivelled up balls you can think of!
My heart was in my throat
I've been trying to set this site live since last Friday! And finally succeeded yesterday.
But once I copied everything over the whole dang thing was broken! This was not the situation in test. In a perfect world I could easily say it's not my problem
But I don't have a dev ops team. We a two man band and i happen to be dev ops. The new host guys are completely useless. I'm on hold on a call chatting to the live chat guys who are clueless and after asking me a bunch of questions ND wasting my time ask me to email the query instead.
I hang up the phone and call in a favour. In the business its good to have people who owe you a favour. So be nice to ppl. Even if you have your differences. You never know when you can help each other out!
We save the day and the host takes credit
After most shitting myself. My friend and I figured out the issue. But took a freaking while to update cause the host is so slow.
Then the funniest thing happens. An hour later all is well and we have moved on with our lives. I get a mail from the host saying they fixed it and it was a php issue. Which was not even the issue. And wtf is a php issue. That's being vague AF! And you raking credit for something you didn't do!! Another hit to your legitimacy as a host. Needless to say I will never use them willingly. Nor ever recommend them.
Spend Wisely, But Don't Be Cheap
I actually advise said client to change hosts before the deploy. They declined saying its cheaper to stay. What he saved in cash paying the host. He lost in time with me, racking up my billable hours and ultimately pays more!
I'm not saying spend like a trustfund kid at Christmas, but be careful on trying to save too much. Make wise choices. And time is ultimately more precious than money!
Much love, @mimismartypants
