Running Water And The Vanishing Ice (Story)

in #freewrite6 years ago (edited)

It never stops running. The water pump at the back of the house always gives us fresh water.

We use it for everything. To wash clothes, to wash dishes, to wash ourselves. We use it for drinking and we use it to make ice.

Icy cold water is nice in the humid weather.

One day, the water was used to make lots of ice. Small plastic bags to be filled with water, tied up and then put in the freezer. The ice cube trays are also filled up with the fresh running water.

Plenty of cold drinks for the next day.

However, in the morning, all of the ice had vanished. Gone. The freezer was still working as normal, so it could not have melted.

"Who took all the ice? There's none left."

Nobody owned up to taking all of the ice.

So the running water was used again to fill up more small plastic bags and the ice cube trays.

The next morning, the freezer is open again. No ice. It has all vanished.

Like the day before, no one is owning up to taking the ice.

Papa wants to know who is taking the ice, so he decides to keep an overnight watch on the freezer. He sits there in his most comfortable chair and stays awake. He does have a phone and headphones for company.

During the night, he notices a glowing light coming from the freezer. He walks to the door and opens it. There is nothing inside.

“What happened to all the ice?” said Papa.

There is a voice and receives a reply.

“You forgot to fill up the small plastic bags and the ice cube trays. That’s why there is no ice.”

“What about the past two nights?” asked Papa.

“Thank you very much. If you fill up the small plastic bags and the ice trays, there will be some ready in the morning.”

“But who keeps taking the ice?” asked Papa.

“That would be telling,” replied the voice from the freezer.

Papa is not silly though. He decides to fill up the small plastic bags and the ice cube trays. Except this time, there is no way he is going outside in the middle of the night.

He then goes to bed with a smile big on his face.

Day 667: 5 Minute Freewrite: Sunday - Prompt: running water

Sort:

I would not like to hear a voice from the freezer and would stay away from it after this!!!

Great story and now here is another prompt you can write for:

I did wonder if it should lead to another world, a Narnia maybe, but stories go the way they go. Thank you for your comment.

Maybe! That would be a good start to a spooky tale of another world :)

I recommended you story to the @pifc curation contest this week, @mr-neil. I really love this story and so glad you are freewriting :)

Thank you so much. I don't get so much opportunity to write these days. 2 boys and being a teacher keeps me busy. I'll hopefully have some new stories soon.
