Spider Plants

in #esteem7 years ago

The Spider plant is a very popular indoor plant. It is touted as one of top ten house plants to reduce indoor pollution.

I was walking through the park the other day, and I saw this bed of, what I thought, were Spider plants. As I walked along it, I stretched out my hand and casually swept along them. It was then that I got my first surprise. The plants have thorns and my palm was pricked left, right and center. Served me right for being so touchy, feely. If you look closely at the picture, you will notice the thorns.

That got me thinking. Are those actually Spider plants? As far as I know, Spider plants don’t have thorns. But the similarity is there and the reasonable conclusion is that maybe they are of the same family, but of a different variety.

Now, take a look at the following picture. Can you spot the difference between these two plants? At one glance, you may not notice the difference, but if you look closer, you will notice that in the first picture, the plant has got yellow leaves with green edges, whereas in the second photo, the plant has green leaves with yellow edges. Apart from that, the plants in the second photo don’t have thorns. But then, they are also not quite like the spider plants I know. The Spider plant that I know has 'off-shoots'.

The following pictures – from pixaby shows the Spider plant that I know.

So, maybe they are all Spider plants but of a different variety. I will grow some when I can lay my hands on some shoots. I have wanted to do that since I saw a very healthy looking Spider at a friend’s place. Just never got around to doing it. Eventually, I am sure.

Wow. Subtle difference between the two plants, one with thorns and one without.

Kinda like venomous coral snakes and their lookalikes: "Red on yellow kills a fellow. Red on black venom lack.”

Thanks Jon. I must remember the bit about 'Red on Yellow kills a fellow. Red on black, venom lack.'
Red on Yellow kills a fellow. Red on black, venom lack.' Red on Yellow kills a fellow. Red on black, venom lack.' Red on Yellow kills a fellow. Red on black, venom lack.'...

Ha ha. Could be life saving, but better advice is “stay away from all snakes, stay away from all snakes,...”

That is certainly an easier to remember advice. Such a wise man, you are. :-)

Oh that is a tricky plant! I have a spider plant that I put outside in the summer time. To start a new plant all you have to do is cut off one of those little babies and put it in some dirt and it will grow. I have no idea what that thorny plant is. I might have been fooled into thinking that it was a spider plant too!

Thanks Melinda.
I like plants that need minimum maintenance. That is why I want to have a Spider Plant because they are supposedly easy to look after.

Mine gets neglected in the winter and it does just fine, I cut off a few of those baby spiders, wrapped them in a damp paper towel and then wrapped it all in plastic wrap and put it in a big brown envelope and mailed them to a friend in Texas. She started them, kept one spider plant for a self and gave a couple others away to friends, so now my spider has relatives in Texas!

Ah very good. I am not the only one keen on Spider Plants. And it sounds like my kind of plants. Easy to maintain. :-)

Howdy sir Vincent! yes I agree that you need to get some of those plants but not the thorny kind! They look great, by the way.

Thank you. I have intention to get some. :-)

sir Vincent! except it just looked like healthy grass. So you're going to be growing grass in your house?

Why not. As you say, they are healthy grass. It's good to have some plants in the house, some life, some greenery.

howdy sir Vincent! I think I'm a little late getting back to you! lol...sorry, when our internet went down I got way behind, got back on last night and trying to catch up, might take a day or two! So about the grass, you'll have to cut it inside your house?? Mow the lawn in your bedroom?

And I thought you don't love any more. :-)
It's only a pot! Duh! :-)

Howdy sir Vincent! I think you should have more than just a pot for the grass, I think it would be cool to have grass to walk on wouldn't it? That sounds like something an artist would do doesn't it?
I'll be back to harrass you when I get up, it's almost 2:00am here so I need to close up for the night.

I hope you had a good night's sleep. :-)
