What people do when they find something.

In the case of explosives? I think we will all agree, LEAVE IT!

Lost and found, lost and leave, or finders keepers — You decide

Recently, we found an android phone maybe not quite as exciting as explosives.

My husband and I found ourselves with a decision to be made while shopping. Yes, there was this android resting on some displayed shirts at Kohl’s Department Store.

What to do?

I am the sort to give the android to customer service serving as a lost and found.

My husband on the other hand thinks the person will return to the place they left it.

We cannot agree on this one so I compromise and might I add, only if he is with me.

Sorry, if you read this and it was your phone, since I compromised and left it for the owner to find it.

Last summer I lost my driver license while walking Max. A few weeks later I receive a letter from the police someone turned it in. Glad the person who picked it up does not think like my husband.

Lost dogs

My husband looks for the owner and believes the owner may be already looking for the dog. Which works sometimes.

If there is a lost dog my neighbor believes we must capture the dog and keep it until the rightful owner arrives to retrieve the dog.

For me, the logic of what to do depends, after a while, we must call the humane society so they can locate the owners. We know most of the dogs in the neighborhood but we had a situation once.

We had a situation of a lost dog and the neighbor and I ended up finding someone that knew the number for the guy at work. He came home mad at us for calling him. This is more reinforcement to call the pound. So what if the owner has to pay a fine.

Lost keys are the number one thing most people lose.

This includes me.
I have found my keys hanging in the trunk keyhole after driving around town all day,

I have also found my keys outside the front door hanging from the lock.

Once I unknowingly dropped my keys on the front lawn when I thought my neighbor was injured.

Then there is the old misplaced in the house, which no longer happens.

TIP for not losing keys

The key thing I solved by becoming obsessive upon shutting the trunk, entering the house, and they go in the same tray once inside the house.

A no-brainer on some lost items

We pull up at the dog groomers and next to my car door are prescription glasses lying on the pavement. I took them inside so the owner could retrieve them, it easy for us to decide on what to do.

Finders keepers – then sell it legally

You read that right. You can buy lost luggage and other items left on airplanes.

We visited this store while traveling across the States.

It sometimes feels like the airlines go with the old adage: Finders keepers.

Here is a link in case you want to stop in and look for something someone else lost to buy in Scottsboro, Alabama. You can follow them on Instagram.

They are constantly restocking. Airlines lose about 10,000 pieces of luggage everyday. Add it up that is almost 4 million a year. This doesn’t count the luggage and all other items people leave on the airlines.

Summary

My belief is the less time it is missing the more likely you are to get it back.

Retrieve immediately.

Words all mine ☺

I'm with you. I turn it in to customer service or the police. Because I am afraid the next person to find it may simply take it themselves. If it was mine I would hope the person finding it would leave it in a secure place for me

I agree. :) I don't trust the other way either.

Thanks I can use it .. lol
nice to meet you

I'm with you and Melinda, if it's something valuable.

I had a call from the police today. Someone had handed in a lost bag. There was no wallet, but there was a prescription bottle and a notebook full of notes that had my name and phone number in it. From the clues in that I was able to identify the client (not the name on the bottle) and give the police their cell number. So that was a win for handing it in.

Another time, we saw a dog in our back yard. It disappeared, but then came back, and it was getting dark. So we brought it in and started checking all the lost and found pet websites. When that produced nothing, we did have to call the pound, but as it had a number on its tag, they were able to identify the owner. But they wouldn't tell us, and came to get it, then called the owner themselves.

Great examples and I agree with both of the ways you handled things.
Melinda agreed with what I wrote in the post so we are all in agreement.
I felt it best to used customer service and the pound.

The thing I tend to lose the most is my bank card or credit card. I take it out to do online banking or shopping and then forget it there because I get distracted by the kids and then... oops where did it go?
To only find it a month later after I order a new card lol.

You are right for giving the phone to the customer service rep. Leaving it there can also mean leaving it for another person to grab, taking the chance of that person keeping it. That's what I tell myself anyway.

It would drive me wild to lose my bank card. I have a system for that too.

OH! What's your system? To put it back right away doesn't always work cause kids... they need me randomly lol.

I give it to lost and found or business where something is lost.

I have that problem too.
It didn't turn it in, I will sit there and wait till the owner comes back to look for it... That's me...

I hear ya... same here

I found a couple of things over the years and I always leave it with an officer (if they are around) or with the store clerk. My reasoning is that if I leave it where I have found it, maybe someone else will come and steal it :D

that's the way I think too.

Howdy there rebeccabe! I'm with you, turn the phone in to customer service, if I lose something I always check with them. the key thing you got handled, good job. I wonder how much the airline sells lost luggage for? that just sounds weird but what else are they going to do with it?

well click the link above ...it is right under the photo of the store and you will see they sell everything in the luggage too..lol

Howdy rebeccabe! wow that site is interesting, that's quite remarkable, just wish I was close to Alabama! Thanks for a fun and interesting post!
