Geeking Out on Labels: Design Fun!

I've been getting geeky with the labels for my homemade herbal medicines. I really enjoy designing graphics, even though I'm most definitely a novice at this stuff. I've always enjoyed it, since I was a kid, and I've hand drawn some beautiful wine labels for some elderberry wine I made for someone's wedding once - I should dig that out to share with you. However, with the rise of apps and programs that make it easy for anyone to do graphic design without a degree in fiddling about with photoshop, which I've never been able to use, making labels online is a lot of fun! I also don't want to get my bottles mixed up - as it is, I have to keep tasting them to see which is hops and which is verbena - they are in separate boxes, but I keep forgetting which box was which.

I ended up paying for a free trial on Canva, which will go for a month - then I'll just see what happens. If I save and print as many as I anticipate needing, then I won't need to extend the trial. Maybe I should make a few without the names or dates printed on them so I can just type them in on another program at a later date, or maybe I'll just do the free trial again with another email address - I've watched almost a whole year on Stan for free doing that (sssh, don't tell anyone!)

The basic design worked well, and I loved the look, but when I printed it and put it on the bottles, it was kinda hard to make out the writing without glasses - and I don't even really wear glasses! So I changed the font on the 'Breathe' and made the background lighter, so it's much clearer. I also simplified the instructions a little and made them bigger too.

I then played around with the balms - I have made a calendula salve, a heel balm and a plantain balm, so they were fun to make as well. Now I have to stick them all on with a glue stick and I didn't bother with sticky labels and figuring out how to print them! Damn those big globs of glue that you have to squish down! I need a better glue solution, as well as something a little more environmentally friendly!

Then I started to realise I was getting pressed for time and realised that I couldn't stuff around with all the instructions. I figured if I was going to pick up a tincture and use it, I'd know what it was for! And if I was giving it to family, I'd write down what it was for or send them a link to a website. Hence, my plantain tincture label is a little more simple! I almost like this one the best, as I could make the mandalas a little bigger. This way all I really need to do is change the name of it rather than fiddle about with the how to and what's it for. These are really only for personal use, lest I get into trouble, so I didn't really need all the fluff!

What I'd really like to do is draw the mandela myself, so it's even more personal. Perhaps I'll have time on this road trip. I am currently annoyed that I forgot my hops tincture. Jamie says he brought his... but he is talking about his super hoppy IPA he is currently sipping by the fire under the stars.

Do you make your own fancy labels for things? Show me in the comments below!

What programs do you use for graphic design?

My ex does graphic design so I haven't had to do it for a long time. I don't even remember what I used to use, but I do remember a wonderful tutorial called "you suck at Photoshop"

Oh hahahahha Im AWFUL at photoshop!!!!!! Thanks for the laugh and glad I'm not the only one. Xxx

Posted using Partiko Android

It's super funny. He basically doctors photos of his ex girlfriend the whole time.

Posted using Partiko Android

Oh my god. And now is he photoshopping you????

No, no. It wasn't my ex that did the tutorial. That would be awful. No, he just did my graphic design stuff for me all those years so now I have to remember how to do my own, but all I remember is this silly tutorial.

Posted using Partiko Android

Oh phew, because that WOULD be wierd!!!

Posted using Partiko Android

For real. It's weird enough between us without all that.

Ooh, these are really cool! I must admit I've never gotten fancy with an app for labels - to be honest, I didn't know about any, really! My labels are all hand written and mishmash based on what I had available at the time.
My favorites are the ones where I use these labels I bought from a catalog once - I thought they were sticky labels for reusing envelopes, which I did for work ALL THE TIME, covering them up with marker and various office supply labels. When I saw these, I thought, ooh, neato and convenient! But they're not sticky labels at all, they're just on plain paper, so you still need to glue or tape them down to use. XD I've done it, but I like them better as apothecary labels:

Normally I trim off the part that says "reuse envelopes, save trees" but I forgot to on this one. XD And yeah - that is a reused yeast jar. I reuse everything! :D
I attach them with packing tape, so the label is waterproofed and I won't smutz it up.

Ah, aren't you cute. These are sweet!! Now you have to post a recipe for the vapor rub!!! Go on you!!!

I think the label making appeals to the OCD in me. Yep, might be hyperbolic, but I feel better with things more organised - especially when I'm stressed. Plus, creating these decreased my stress, so I know what you mean about the aaaah that comes from organising cupboards! I got a box for my essential oils the other day and ooooh didn't that satisfy!!!

This was actually my first time making some. I think I might make it a bit stronger next time, but it takes a long time to use up a jar. :) Full of EOs you apparently can't use with young kids though, and I wonder about my childhood memories of mom using Vick's vapo rub on me! Lol
No, I totally understand the organization happy. So satisfying!

Vicks was the best, rubbed on your chest, a loving kindness memory!!!

Right? I'm just wondering what ingredients were safe in that vs. homemade, or maybe people just didn't realize that you shouldn't use menthol on young kids back in the 80s, lol.

Ah, so THATS the cause of all thats wrong with me!!! Te he. What recipe did you use for your vapor rub? You have me intrigued now!!

Uhhhhh ...I'd honestly have to dig around to find it, but I think it was peppermint, eucalyptus, and ...rosemary, maybe? It was several months ago that I made it and the first time, so it's not embedded in my brain, but my first foray into making my own. XD I think the base was just olive oil and beeswax.

Ha, yep I sure did!!!

Simple and pretty to look at. I would love to design but I never seem to find the time.

Thanks. I think we are time poor in general.. would live to write more, create more! Appreciate you stopping by.

Yeah we are time poor. I think it is priorities though. Something is needed enough, we create the time for it.

They do look pretty awesome.

... I'm having my Grape tincture as I write this...

Haha yes... me too. And Jim is enjoying a hops tincture ...💚💚💚
