Inició sus estudios de arte, entre los años 1887 y 1889, en la Escuela de Dibujo de la Sociedad de Arte Finlandesa (Helsinki).
Luego viajó a París, entre los años 1890 y 1891, para formarse en el Atelier Cormon. En el año 1898, estuvo en la Acadèmie Julián. Además, entre los años 1897 y 1898, estuvo en Florencia (Italia) estudiando en la Scuola Libere.
Su producción artística abarca la pintura, la ilustración y las caricaturas. También trabajó como periodista.
Sus obras reflejan situaciones de vida cotidiana, aunque también realizó varios retratos.
Se casó cuatro veces.
En el año 1933 fundó la Asociación finlandesa de Grabadores de Arte. Fue profesor y director de la Escuela de dibujo de la Asociación Finlandesa de Arte, ubicada en Helsinki.
Falleció el 15 de mayo de 1937 en Helisinki (Finlandia).

He began his art studies between 1887 and 1889 at the Finnish Art Society's Drawing School (Helsinki).
He then traveled to Paris between 1890 and 1891 to train at the Atelier Cormon. In 1898, he attended the Acadèmie Julián. He also spent time in Florence, Italy, studying at the Scuola Libere between 1897 and 1898.
His artistic output encompasses painting, illustration, and caricatures. He also worked as a journalist.
His works depict everyday life situations, although he also created several portraits.
He was married four times.
In 1933, he founded the Finnish Art Engravers' Association. He was a professor and director of the Finnish Art Association's Drawing School in Helsinki.
He died on May 15, 1937, in Helsinki, Finland.

Despite of his quite German name, Gebhard was obviously not involveld in German arts of his time but in traditionally oriented Russian art. Nevertheless he seems very versatile - especially his painting "Suklaatyttö" ("Chocolate Girl") looks very much inspired by French artists of his time while the direct frontal view into the girl's eyes have a 'modern touch'...
