The bitcoin virtual currency weakened on Wednesday, reversing from record highs the previous day, while bitcoin futures also dropped with low volume on Cboe Futures Exchange.

On the US-based Bitfinex market, Bitcoin was at $ 16,649.00 at 18:03 pm.

Prices hit a record $ 17,500 high on Tuesday, extending their gains for the year after starting 2017 at around $ 1,000.

Bitcoin CBOE futures traded down more than 1.5% to $ 17,780. The contract has jumped nearly 20% in its debut on Monday but trading volume has also declined.
