Africa #4: On the dirt road to Sodwana Bay 🚗 | Swaziland | iSimangaliso

in #africa7 years ago

Our next destination was Sodwana Bay with its magnificent iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

We took the road through Swaziland because someone told us, that this route would be the most scenic. The route was indeed quite scenic, but not as amazing as the Panorama Route.

Once we arrived in the border town Bulembo we were quite shocked. The roads in Swaziland are in a WAY worse condition than in South Africa, at least at this part of the country.

Until Piggs Peak it was a dirt road covered with countless more or less big rocks. We thought “Ok that will give us a flat tire for sure”, but we were wrong (but there were way more dirt roads to come ;)).
After a picnic in Piggs Peak and back in South Africa we decided to take another short cut.

Instead of driving the Interstate 2 to Hluhluwe and then the R22 to Sodwana (like you should do it!) we took a “shortcut” which turned out to be another dirt road after a few miles.

The road was terrible, the sun began to set and it started to rain, so we just praid that we wouldn’t stuck in a mudhole (when there are no rocks on the road everything is full of sand, which turns into mud when it is raining). But we were lucky and arrived in Sodwana Bay about 5 hours later than we had planned.

In Sodwana Bay we stayed a couple of nights for some diving but unfortunately September is off season so we didn’t see whale sharks or other big fish. But we saw some whales from the boat.

Tomorrow we will show you what else you can do in Sodwana Bay, when you are tired of diving. So check it out.
