RE: Why Steem stakeholders should embrace AI incubation
Been meaning to respond to this, but haven't had the time.
The site definitely needs something else if it's to ever grow beyond what you see now. It does not currently function as a social media site, as the regulars stick to the small handful of people they've known forever, and newbies come in and either do not know what to do or learn to use AI to make crap articles. There is no "connected" factor here that in itself drives other social sites, and there appears to be a bit of "snootiness" amongst a few of those that are here; they seem to want nothing to change on the site, just people to adapt to it, and somehow want to continue to be here in this broken space (they have been applying bandaids). Which is likely going to get even emptier...
The ongoing debate has led many to believe that AI = bad = end of discussion here on Steemit. That mindset is the main reason why this thing never grows. Good/honest use of AI = EXTREMELY GOOD! I've never understood why the conversation slips to bid-bots and how they've "ruined" the site. Why not fix the front page to actually show articles that are worth showing and ignore those that get bot votes? It is supposed to be decentralized, but I realize that for the social platform idea to work, thumbs-downs are necessary. However, why not simply ignore those people (the ones who post the same pic and very little to go with it, but get tons of rewards)? Let the design omit them completely... at the same time, realize that there are people here who use the vote bot system responsibly as well. It's not just a one-way street, and everyone should be penalized...I myself (a person without a ton of SP) have seen the good in using them to get rewards after getting pennies on all posts for a long time while waiting for SC01 &02 to save me. I have a feeling that a lot of people log out and never return after experiencing that feeling and realizing the only way to get anywhere is to dump money into a volatile coin with a sketchy history and an uncertain future.
Bottom line, the site is not going to fix itself and WILL lose more people as time goes on. Something needs to be done, and soon, to turn the tide. Is it that hard to make this site actually do something via AI? I mean, DO something that serves a need and will attract users/investors?
Exactly. This has always been my opinion about all forms of automation, not just AI. It's a tool, so it can be used well or it can be used badly. Trying to cultivate the blockchain without powerful automation is like the early days of the Internet when search pages used to be maintained by hand. It could never have grown under those conditions.
If we want scale here, we must have lots and lots of really good automation that helps people to establish the connections with each other. And now, that means really good AI, too.
I'm seeing so many possibilities just from running the @thoth.test account, I just wish someone with funding and a bullpen of developers would sit down and think carefully about the opportunities. The reward system and the free transaction cost gives AI a platform that doesn't exist anywhere else. I just don't understand why nobody with the right resources seems to see it.
Yep. That's definitely what I think. As they say, if you're not growing, you're dying. I'm in favor of growth. ;-)
