Yes, the sheep only have two teats. In the case of triplets, the two strongest lambs prevail, the third usually remains a ‘Nücker’. But good, experienced ewes manage to distribute the milk fairly. However, these animals are often very emaciated because they cannot eat as much as they need to produce and distribute.

Don't worry, Erbse stays!
The yellow ‘earrings’ are ear tags with a number and an electronic chip inside. Livestock farmers are obliged to tag their animals before they are nine months old. I do it earlier because the cartilage in the ears is still quite soft. I imagine that piercing them hurts less that way. However, it's not ‘bad’ at all. The lambs flinch briefly and immediately love me again as if nothing had happened.

It’s also indicative of a very healthy ewe when she has triplets, isn’t it?

Ah, I didn’t know that. I thought those meant they were listed for sale. 😅 Sorry for getting upset.

I think it is mainly healthy animals that have triplets. At the same time, the ‘Ostfriesisches Milchschaf’ breed is bred for good fertility.
