The yellow ‘earrings’ are ear tags with a number and an electronic chip inside. Livestock farmers are obliged to tag their animals before they are nine months old. I do it earlier because the cartilage in the ears is still quite soft. I imagine that piercing them hurts less that way. However, it's not ‘bad’ at all.
