Come on! Du wirst eines Tages Böckchen besuchen!
Dann spendiere ich dir auch einen Kaffee... 😇

By the way, is Erbse still around? I dreamt about sheep last night... They're all white but then, there's this particular lamb - dazzlingly white as if constantly gazed upon by the moonlight. The whitest of them all. And then I woke up and thought it was Erbse...

What a shame it was all a dream. It felt so real - Ich war sehr glücklich

is Erbse still around?

Na klar!
All the lambs are still there. Firstly, I haven't managed to sell one (maybe that's a good thing...) and secondly, we've had a very good year so far: not a single lamb has died (they say 10-20% lamb mortality is normal), the animals are perfectly healthy and have survived every infection with aplomb.

I went out to the pasture yesterday just to take a photo of Erbse for you. She got new earrings yesterday (like her sister and all her half-siblings). She thinks she looks beautiful with the yellow jewellery in her ears. And now Erbse has a surname too: 77496 🫣

I’ve heard that when a ewe has triplets, things can get complicated (perhaps labor-intensive for you) - since she only has two teats.

not a single lamb has died

Wow! I’m pretty sure that’s down to a shepherdess who actually loves her flock...and can't help naming them all out of sheer stubborn affection. 🙂

Thank you so, so much for the pictures and sorry for making you go to the trouble. But that’s exactly the sheep from my dream. There were so many of them, and I was so happy being among them… but I couldn’t even touch that particular lamb. Someone had taken her away, just out of pure admiration for how white she was. 🙁

And now Erbse has a surname too: 77496 🫣

I guess Erbse won't be around for long. Why would you name them... Now I get to know them as well. 😞

Is it just me, or does she know she’s being photographed? That leg pose feels a little too intentional. 🤭 Or maybe she just forages elegantly like that. Yes, the earrings looked good on her 🙂😞

Yes, the sheep only have two teats. In the case of triplets, the two strongest lambs prevail, the third usually remains a ‘Nücker’. But good, experienced ewes manage to distribute the milk fairly. However, these animals are often very emaciated because they cannot eat as much as they need to produce and distribute.

Don't worry, Erbse stays!
The yellow ‘earrings’ are ear tags with a number and an electronic chip inside. Livestock farmers are obliged to tag their animals before they are nine months old. I do it earlier because the cartilage in the ears is still quite soft. I imagine that piercing them hurts less that way. However, it's not ‘bad’ at all. The lambs flinch briefly and immediately love me again as if nothing had happened.

It’s also indicative of a very healthy ewe when she has triplets, isn’t it?

Ah, I didn’t know that. I thought those meant they were listed for sale. 😅 Sorry for getting upset.

I think it is mainly healthy animals that have triplets. At the same time, the ‘Ostfriesisches Milchschaf’ breed is bred for good fertility.
