Anyone who lives and breathes hoops like I do understands that statistics aren’t everything. The worth of a player can never be decided by them, but they are an important factor when dissecting a player or team’s overall body of work.

The advanced statistics are more informative than the basic version, but they still aren’t fool proof. This list is not a rock-steady ‘Top 10 players in the NBA list’, don’t be mistaken. This is simply the players who frequented the top tiers of the advanced stats leaderboards whittled down and placed in order.

With that in mind, let’s get into the nitty gritty of the list. There is five separate stats that have been used to decipher the overall top 10; Player Efficiency Rating (PER), Net Rating (NRTG), Total Win Shares (WS), Box Plus/Minus (BPM) and Value Over Replacement Player (VORP). Add all of these into one number and presto, you have your cumulative ranking number.

Win Shares, Box Plus/Minus and Value Over Replacement Player are some of the most reliable individual advanced statistics around. They do not take the rest of the players on the court into consideration as much as others. Player Efficiency Rating and Net Rating have their flaws — especially Net Rating — but they are so commonly cited that throwing them in the mix was a must.

Without further ado, let’s reel ‘em off.
