Achievement 2 @imran-hossain08 Task: Basic Security on Steem

Security is one of the most important aspects of being a responsible user on the Steem blockchain. Steem gives you complete control of your account—but with that power comes the responsibility to secure it wisely. In this post, I’ll share what I’ve learned about Steem’s security system, explain the roles of different keys, and answer the five important questions from the Achievement 2 task.

Question 1: Have you retrieved all your keys on Steemit?
Yes, I have successfully retrieved all of my keys from my Steemit Wallet. These include:

Posting Key

Active Key

Owner Key

Memo Key

After signing up, I accessed the “Wallet” tab on Steemit, clicked on “Permissions,” and carefully saved each key separately. This helped me understand the hierarchy and purpose of each one.

Question 2: Do you know each of these key functions and restrictions?
Absolutely! Here’s a breakdown of what each key does:

Posting Key:
Used for non-financial operations like posting, commenting, voting, following, and resteeming. This is the key I use for daily activities.

Active Key:
Used for sensitive tasks like transferring STEEM, powering up/down, and voting for witnesses. I only use this when needed.

Owner Key:
The most powerful key. It can reset all other keys. I’ve saved this key offline and plan to use it only if my account is ever compromised.

Memo Key:
Used to encrypt/decrypt memos in wallet transfers. To encrypt a memo, I just place a # before the message.

Each key serves a specific purpose, and using them correctly minimizes the risk of being hacked.

Question 3: How do you plan to keep your master password?
I take my account security seriously. Here’s how I’ve stored my master password:

Offline Storage: I’ve saved the password on a USB drive and an encrypted external hard drive.

Printed Backup: I’ve printed a copy and stored it in a sealed envelope in a safe place.

No Online Backups: I do not store it on cloud storage or any device connected to the internet.

I understand that losing the master password means losing access to my account permanently, so I’ve made multiple secure backups.

Question 4: Do you know how to transfer your STEEM tokens to another Steem user account?
Yes! Transferring STEEM is simple once you know how:

Go to your Wallet

Click “Transfer” beside your STEEM balance

Enter the recipient's username, the amount, and an optional memo

Confirm using your Active Key

It’s important to double-check the recipient’s name to avoid sending tokens to the wrong account.

Question 5: Do you know how to power up your STEEM?
Yes! Powering up converts your STEEM into Steem Power (SP), which gives you more influence on the platform. Here’s how I do it:

Open the Wallet tab

Click “Power Up” beside your STEEM balance

Enter the amount you want to power up

Confirm using your Active Key

Powering up is a great way to grow your influence and commitment to the Steem ecosystem.

Final Thoughts
Learning about Steem’s key system has been incredibly valuable. The layered security model allows flexibility while protecting users from potential threats. I now feel confident navigating my wallet, understanding key permissions, and maintaining the security of my Steem account.
