One tag? That sucks. I see other app even push beyond the 5 tags limit and I'm not sure that's a bug. I kind of have to add my tag in steemit if I use Appics to post which restrict the tags I can use and add #appics and another tag for their category leaving me with 3 tags I have to choose but after I got to steemit to edit and change or add the tag I want.
Even then, I think if the tag was added early enough (before Honolulu turns Monday), my script should have picked it up.
Yeah the creator gets one tag and the voters vote on the other 4. So like you said, I go in Steemit and edit the Dtube post to add tags.

However, you are right, I forgot to go back and edit in the tags like I usually do.
