You've been admiring the orchids for months, almost every time you go to the store. Well, today is the day you finally decided to buy one. But as you approach the display, you realize you're not sure which orchid is the best, or the healthiest. Owning a Just Add Ice orchid should be an experience you cherish from the moment you bring your plant home. Today's post offers tips to help you choose the best orchid in the store. Inspect the roots

Roots are a visible indicator of an orchid's health, so they should be the first thing you check. Healthy roots are plump to the touch and white or green in color, while brown and soft roots indicate overwatering. Don't be afraid to remove the growing pot from the decorative pot to better examine the orchid's roots. Take home any plant that is in good condition from the store so you can continue caring for it at home

Look for bright green leaves Yellow leaves can indicate an orchid is in distress. If the upper leaves of an orchid are a bright, vibrant green, but the lower leaves are yellowing, this is normal. Over time, mature leaves die, allowing newer leaves to replace them. However, if all or most of the leaves are yellowing, the plant is likely dehydrated or overwatered. Yellow spots can also indicate an insect infestation, so check the tops and undersides of the leaves for webbing or white bumps left by mealybugs and spider mites.
