The species is native to South America and can even be found in many regions of Brazil. Its name refers to the flower's shape, which resembles a pendulum, and it is generally found in white and yellow, although pink varieties and hybrids also exist. Its size ranges from 14 to 50 cm, and all parts of the species are considered toxic and narcotic. The plant contains tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine, atropine, and hyoscyamine, which encourages people to use it for hallucinogenic purposes. However, those who take risks with it can overdose and die, or suffer from muscle paralysis, tachycardia, confusion, and mydriasis.
