The destruction of mangroves and diversion of seashore for commercial purposes are reasons for the decline in the number of nests. The threat of losing nests is high as 14 of the 22 nests are atop trees in private, temple lands in Kannur and Kasaragod. More significantly, 15 of the previously reported nesting sites were found abandoned or lost due to felling of trees and other reasons.
