If I really were a time-traveller, I'd be strongly tempted to fast-forward to the happy ending and skip all the painful stuff. ;)

BTW, I guess I wasn't consciously thinking about it, but looking at history I would have to say that the smart money has pretty much always sought to leave the tyrants behind and to go start something new and better...

But it seems to never succeed, just to need repeating. :O
