Checking Hard Drive Status (Health) via CrystalDiskInfo (2025-09-21)

Data is yours only if you have backups

Years ago, I lost several hard drives—and with them, a lot of photos—because I didn’t keep backups. Since then, I’ve made backups a priority: using both cloud storage and a local 18TB + 18TB 1:1 backup setup.

I monitor drive health with CrystalDiskInfo. My Surface Studio has a 2TB SSD, and I use two 18TB external USB drives for backups.

The external drives currently show about 2.6 years of power-on time, but an unusually high power-on count of around 10K. This happens because Windows repeatedly powers them down when idle to save energy.

To extend their lifespan, I disabled the option “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”
