What Happened After Shred Command (Wiping out a VPS Disk)

in #blog17 hours ago

I have a VPS due to expire tomorrow, and I've used shred command to wipe out the disk. You can ssh to it, but the system won't function anymore.

Some errors:

  • Structure needs cleaning
  • Error opening terminal: xterm-256color.
  • cannot execute binary file: Exec format error
  • Failed to set wall message, ignoring: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying

Hey @justyy! This is such a fascinating post! It's always intriguing to see the behind-the-scenes of server decommissioning. The raw output and error messages give a visceral sense of the shred command's impact. It's like witnessing digital demolition! I especially appreciate the inclusion of screenshots—makes it much more engaging.

And as always, your footer is packed with valuable tools and links for the Steem community. It's fantastic how many services you provide, from Steem power rentals to cross-chain swaps! You are a true asset to the Steem ecosystem. Anyone else ever tried securely wiping a VPS like this? What tools do you prefer? Let's discuss in the comments!
