- I understand Ethan, you’re a valuable asset to our team, but I am afraid there were some difficulties with the budget and we had to make some cuts, I truly hope you find some work in the future, I really wish you all the best luck. If it was up to me I would’ve kept you, but you know the guys upstairs…
The sergeant continued with his apologetic tone as his helmet eye bobbed up and down in almost hypnotizing manner. Ethan knew he was getting sacked, but no one told him that, as if it was a taboo subject all of a sudden. No one came to him and said “You’re no longer work here” Everyone just talked about the contract decease and wishing him luck, as if everyone gathered to clue him into the reality, and the reality was he was fucked. He wasted 8 years on militia training, and another year working without pay to gather the needed experience, all for nothing? So it seemed. His wife and kid would now have to beg for bread and his father’s scorn. He quickly shook his head, he didn’t want to go to his unhappy thoughts again. - As I understand Sergeant, I am being sacked, am I correct?
- Uhmm, yes that is so Ethan.
- Do I get some refund while I search through my other options.
- Aah, yes, you see, the thing is, we will give you one month salary extra, but that is all we can spend at this time, you see the budget cuts and the expenses of the troops marching against the Vondurs.
Ethan bowed, smiled and turned away. He didn’t need any more of this nonsense. He knew his options are limited at best. The only militia station that hired Aholian soldiers was here at the border, he couldn’t go to the main city with his religion, he would have to bow to the altar of the Emperor three times per day and wear those pointy hats and masks with the fangs, and he would not throw his ancestry for all the money in the world. Maybe the only option would be to join the troops in the East in their fight against the Vondurs but he knew that he lacked the courage to do so, and he wasn’t ready to give his life to promote emperors political regime. Those armors were awesome though, he would look good in them.He was taller than the rest of his co-workers and his shoulders barely fit the door, he was a true ancestor of Aholian tall people, and that armor would be sexy as... Ethan slammed the door behind him, they didn’t need him and he wouldn’t go begging. The street market echoed with shouts and laughter as former deputy of the Great Valley militia walked with a sack over his shoulder like a beggar. He bought few apples to ease the conversation with his wife and head home on the end of the village. The home he built alone with a little help of his father and his two cousins who were carpenters, his beautiful wife Serena was the daughter of mason so his chimney was top of the class, his wife was beautiful also, it was rumored her grandma was one of the Chet’ri tribes that roamed the wilds and gathered seed of men, she was strong, fierce and a sight to behold, he was sometimes afraid of her. Sweet Serena, the shit she put up with, what on earth did she see in him, and now he lost his job.
He approached their house with a wooden porch outside, with two chairs and a small table. He let his shield and his sacked sack fall to the ground. Then he sat on a chair and sighed. “I’m a looser” he thought to himself, all the negativity and anxiety that was built up that day heaved on him like a massive rock, I should go and fight that war and let Vondurs take care of me. The tobacco box was waiting for him under the table. He tore a piece of paper and put small portion of tobacco in it, as he slowly rolled the cigarette to even out the tobacco and to produce a smokable object. He lit the cigarette with a match and took a good whiff. The sun was slowly setting and evening horns could be heard. He took another one and gazed hypnotized by the orange glow. “Everything will be just fine” he exclaimed to himself quietly as a tear rolled down his cheek, he couldn’t convince himself how could he convince his wife, then a loud scream emerged from the inside of his house, the kind that bring chills all the way to your spine. His heart began to race as he quickly stood up. “This is bad!”
