Once, there was a time when land was in abundance. Even ordinary persons had land for agriculture and to built a house upon it. Then the time has come in which there is an acute scarcity of lands for houses.

I know very well when in India people who had plenty of land used to gift it to someone who had no land. They were not generous but it was their need to make someone neighbor as the areas were mostly vacant. Even 30 years ago land cost was very low compared to the cost of building a house on it. In my city which has tall buildings now, once had gardens of fruits and agriculture land.

Off course population in India has increased a lot but there are other reasons behind scarcity of land.

  1. Once people used to work in agriculture sector. Families had plenty of land whereas they had a single house in which brothers, sisters, uncles, cousins used to live. Now every member of the family have separate house of his/her own. This had lead to increasing demand of houses and land.
  2. Houses are not necessity for most of the people. They are a way of investment for many. They buy huge land masses and then built houses there for making profit.
  3. Government projects like roads, highways, buildings and private factories, malls need big chunks of land.

So, the land is shrinking while demand is increasing. This is forcing lots of people to live without houses. Now land has become more costly compared to the cost of building house on it. Property prices are too high to afford it. This is an alarming situation.
