How to Help Your Dog Get Comfortable with the Leash
Getting your dog used to a leash can be easy if you go step by step. Start inside where it’s quiet and familiar. Keep treats and praise ready—your dog will learn faster when it feels safe and happy.
Let your dog meet the leash
• Hold the leash in your hand and let your dog sniff it.
• Give a small treat every time it sniffs or touches the leash.Clip it on without walking
• Fasten the leash to your dog’s collar or harness.
• Let your dog move freely around the room for a few minutes.
• Reward calm behavior with a treat or gentle petting.Practice walking indoors
• Gently guide your dog by walking a few steps ahead.
• If your dog pulls, stop and wait until the leash is loose again.
• Praise and treat every time your dog walks beside you.Move outside in short bursts
• Go into the yard or down the driveway first.
• Keep walks to 5–10 minutes at first.
• Let your dog sniff and explore—this builds positive memories.Be patient and consistent
• Practice every day, even for just a few minutes.
• Use the same commands: “Let’s go,” “Easy,” or whatever you choose.
• Always end on a good note: a treat, a cuddle, or a fun play.
With time and gentle praise, your dog will learn that the leash means adventure and treats. Soon you’ll both be ready for longer, happy walks together!
