The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a bronze statue of the Amida Buddha that sits on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple, located near Hase Station. It was cast in 1251 with a height of 13.35 meters and weighs about 93 tons. The statue sat in halls that were built and rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries after being destroyed by typhoons where the last hall was swept away by a tidal wave in 1498.

This is the second tallest bronze statue of Buddha in Japan surpassed by the statue of Buddha at Todaiji Temple in Nara. The Daibutsu was once covered in gold leaf but only small traces of gold are left on the face.
