The Cat on the Roof

This week is Children's Book Week and unlike adults, most children still love stories, storytellers and books. And in libraries, children are doing what they rarely do at school and at home: sitting quietly and listening intently. Many libraries present a read-aloud afternoon, this is usually on Wednesday afternoons when primary schools are closed. Some nurseries and primary schools visit the library with the children, sometimes children go with a parent or alone.
Of course, the intention is also to sell books after all most holidays are more about sales than promoting the theme in a natural way which in this case is the love of reading.

Apart from buying books and touting some, there is ok a children's jury who will declare 1 new book as the best (this is already known by the time book week starts and you guessed right: the chosen book is already printed including the mention 'chosen book 2025 by the children's jury'.

For those who buy some, there is also and children's book week gift (the most dumped book for which a writer is asked).

Arch, of course the cat on the roof is not a cat but.... a miss and her name is not Muffin but Minoes. It is the writer/journalist Tibbe she visits and with whom she finds shelter. A miss who hrars the latest news from the cats, one that changes from a cat into a human is not easy to deal with and misses on the roof or who, when you are out for a walk, suddenly start hunting or steal fish cause trouble.

The entire film in Dutch 👇

A film in Dutch? And our Dutch friends always tell us that there are only films in English there, with subtitles...

We have Dutch films, plenty especially for children which this one is (same for the book).

I guess your Dutch friends are more into English?

How about this one? Based on one of the Books of Tonke Dragt?
She died at the age of 93 last year.
The film (2008) is made/directed by Dutch people.

Oh, to be honest, they watch just as little television as we do. From previous years, they have retained the impression that Dutch television does not use dubbing, but shows everything with subtitles. That probably applies to Hollywood productions...

I haven't been watching TV for at least 20 years and the same counts for my children. In the old days we mainly watched BBC (Hollywood/American wasn't that much introduced), next we had BRT (Belgium) and if living in the East like my grandparents German broadcasting.

Next the Hollywood started and RTL alike whatever... 25 minutes commercials - 10 minutes watching + shitty news 🤮 it's a waste of my time to sit and wait how one film is soread over 4-5 hours. It's no wonder to me people find it hard to focus.

By the way, Initiced many cinemas are showing old (Dutch included) films today. Can be because the Autumn holidays started or Hollywood is no longer interesting.

One of the first Dutch films impressing me were:

  • Soldaat van Oranje
  • Van de koele meren des Doods
  • De Lift
  • Help, de dokter verzuipt
  • Schatjes
  • the bestseller animation: Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel
  • Baantjer's de Cock detective series I also like
  • The film musical: Ja Zuster, nee Zuster is also great
  • Spijt! (a bullied boy at school commits suicide)

Most are based on books and for sure there are many more.

Now I've got something to do ;-)) I'll check out the movies; I don't think I've ever seen one made in the Netherlands. This is going to be exciting! Thanks ;-))

The trailer looks interesting... ;-))

I always loved this book as a 7 year old. It's oneof these books I kept reading and literally read into pieces.

♥️🍀

If you like Medieval, fantasy it is worth watching, same if you are a kid like my. 🤭

It's good that they still run activities like this to promote reading among the kids

Is it for the child or the writer so s/he sells?

A lot of time is invested in reading and liking books, still not many children like reading.
