The Train that Runs Through a Market! 🚂🥬

Hello everyone 👋

Earlier this year, I found myself traveling between Phuket and Tak almost every month, which left me with very little time to write new posts. Just a few weeks ago, after returning from Tak, my mother suddenly fell ill and had to be hospitalized. So, once again, I made the long journey from Phuket to Tak — but this time, it felt different.

Unlike my usual road trips that are filled with excitement and joy, this one was full of worry and concern for my mother’s health. I stayed by her side at the hospital for almost a week. Thankfully, her condition gradually improved, and she was finally allowed to return home. She was so happy to be back, and I spent another two or three days taking care of her before making my way back to Phuket.

The distance between Tak and Phuket is around 1,300 kilometers, which makes it nearly impossible to drive in one go. That’s why I usually take an overnight stop along the way. This time, I chose to rest in Samut Songkhram, a charming little province not far from Bangkok. It’s a peaceful place with many cute cafés located just 10–15 minutes apart — perfect for short, relaxing detours. ☕

Today, I want to take you along to one of Samut Songkhram’s most iconic attractions — the Maeklong Railway Market (or Talad Rom Hup in Thai), a small local market that has become famous for one very unusual reason: a train runs right through it! 🚂

The Maeklong Railway Market is a small local market built along a short railway line. What makes it special is the train that runs right through the middle of it — a truly unforgettable sight! 🚆 This old yet charming train has become the highlight for many visitors, drawing both Thai and foreign tourists who come here to experience the unique atmosphere and, of course, take memorable photos. 📸

The train at Maeklong Market runs eight times a day, making it quite easy to catch a glimpse of this special moment. It travels only a short distance, but it’s enough to create excitement every time it passes. 🚋 If you’d like to ride the train yourself, you can buy a ticket right at the Maeklong Railway Station, just a few steps away from the market. 🎫

Before the train departs from the platform, it stops and rests for a short while at Maeklong Station. During this time, tourists have a great opportunity to take photos — both from outside on the tracks and even inside the train itself. 🚉 It’s a perfect moment to capture some charming shots before the market folds away its umbrellas once again. 📷

While the train is still parked and waiting for departure, staff members can be seen cleaning the carriages, preparing them for the next journey. During this time, tourists are welcome to step aboard and take photos inside. 🧼✨ It’s a rare chance to explore a real working train at such a close distance — and it adds to the charm of the whole experience. 🚆

This was actually my first time boarding a train! 🚉 Even though I didn’t ride along with it, I still felt incredibly excited just stepping inside. There’s something special about being on the train, hearing the sounds, and feeling the atmosphere — it made the whole visit even more memorable. 💫

Aside from the train itself, there’s also a bustling market that sits right next to the railway tracks. This lively spot is packed with vendors and curious tourists. When the train begins to move, the vendors quickly fold back their umbrellas and awnings — all in perfect unison! 🌂 This sudden transformation is so fascinating to watch that it earned the nickname “Umbrella Pull-Back Market” (Talad Rom Hup).

I’ve wanted to visit this place for a long time, and I’m so happy that I finally made it here. ✨ It was everything I imagined — and more! 😊

Maeklong Railway Market is one of the most unique markets in the world. Located in Samut Songkhram, a small province southwest of Bangkok, the market is famously known as the “umbrella pull-down market” — or Talad Rom Hup in Thai (ตลาดร่มหุบ).

What makes this market special is that a train runs right through it several times a day! 😮 The stalls are set up directly on the railway tracks, and when a train approaches, vendors quickly pull back their umbrellas and move their goods just inches away from the rails. As soon as the train passes, everything goes right back in place — all within seconds!

This incredible scene happens four to eight times daily, depending on the train schedule, and draws both local and international tourists who come to witness this rare blend of chaos and calm. 😄

Visiting the Maeklong Railway Market was truly one of the highlights of my journey. It may be just a small market in a small province, but the energy, charm, and uniqueness of the place left a big impression on me. 💛

From the rhythmic sound of the train approaching to the quick and graceful movements of the vendors folding their umbrellas — it all felt like a scene from a movie. 🎬 Every moment was so vivid and unforgettable.

If you ever find yourself in Samut Songkhram, I highly recommend adding this little adventure to your itinerary. It’s the kind of place that reminds you how simple moments can leave the strongest memories. 💫

Thank you for joining me on this journey — I hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you. Until next time! 😊
