Villa de Leyva, Boyacá Colombia / A dream place.

In 2020, I had the privilege of visiting the beautiful city of Villa de Leyva, Boyacá, Colombia, for almost a year. It's a picturesque tourist and agricultural town. The truth is, Colombia isn't what I was told; it's very beautiful, and I fell in love with its landscapes.

In the Plaza Mayor is the church where baptisms and marriages are held, some of which I was able to witness. In front of the church, because it's such a large space, they hold vegetable markets, sales of new and used items, and the December fairs. On December 24th of that year, we spent time there watching Billo's Caracas Boys. This is a Venezuelan band that plays guaracha music that's delicious for dancing, and they played all night while setting off millions of fireworks to celebrate the occasion.

The street is made of stones and during the day you can feed the pigeons that are normally found in every square; this is no exception.

This part of town has all the tourist attractions: hotels and lodging, tourist offices, and supermarkets. A very interesting thing about this town is that they haven't chosen to open franchises from other parts of the country, like McDonald's, because they want to preserve their Colombian identity by showcasing their shops and products. Attractions there include ATVs (rustic, four-wheeled cars), horseback riding, guided river and mountain tours, the Ostrich Farm, the Terracotta House, a wine cellar, and the Valley of the Dinosaurs, among many others.

On the other side of town is the Villa de Leyva agricultural area, where all kinds of vegetables, greens, and fruits are grown. It was here that I learned the entire process of planting and harvesting the round onion, so important to our table.

The seedling is removed from the seedbed when it has grown about 10 centimeters to be transplanted into the soil where it will grow until harvest.

During its growth, it is cared for with daily watering, sprayed weekly to prevent pests, and once the vegetable reaches its ideal size, a steamroller is used to break its stem so it can continue to grow. In two more weeks, it is ready to be pulled from the ground. The root and leaves must be removed, leaving only the bulb.

This entire process is done manually; there is no machine to do this work. Within six months, the goal is to have a good onion harvest ready to be placed in 10-kilogram sacks, producing a quality product that competes with other crops on the market.

I learned a lot during this time about this type of farming and about greenhouse farming, like tomatoes. It was an unforgettable experience and a wonderful place. If you have time, I recommend you go and visit not only the tourist area but also the agricultural area. You won't regret it.

Villa de Leyva, Boyacá Colombia / Un lugar de ensueño.

En el 2020 tuve el privilegio de visitar por casi un año la hermosa ciudad de Villa de Leyva, Boyacá, Colombia. Es un pintoresco pueblo turístico y agrícola. La verdad es que Colombia no es como me lo pintaron, es muy lindo y quedé enamorada de sus paisajes.

En la Plaza Mayor está la iglesia donde hacen los bautizos y los matrimonios algunos de los que pude lograr presenciar. Al frente de la iglesia, por ser un espacio tan amplio hacen ferias de verduras, ventas de artículos nuevos y usados y las ferias decembrinas. El 24 de Diciembre de ese año la pasamos allí viendo a la agrupación Billo´s Caracas Boys, esta es una orquesta Venezolana que toca música guaracha muy sabrosa de bailar y tocaron toda la noche mientras lanzaban millones de cohetes para celebrar la ocasión.

La calle es de piedras y durante el día puedes alimentar a las palomas que normalmente hay en toda plaza, esta no es la excepción.

En esta parte del pueblo está todo lo turístico, los hoteles y hospedajes, las oficinas de turismo y los supermercados. Algo muy interesante de este pueblo es que aquí no han querido abrir franquicias de otra parte como Mc Donald´s ya que quieren conservar su autoctonía como Colombianos mostrando sus tiendas y sus productos. Las atracciones que allí puedes conseguir son: las cuatri motos (son carros rústicos de 4 ruedas), caballos, paseos guiados a ríos o a montaña, Granja de las Avestruces, La Casa de Terracota, hay una bodega de vinos, El Valle de los Dinosaurios entre muchos otros.

En la otra parte del pueblo está la Villa de Leyva agrícola donde se siembra cualquier tipo de verduras, hortalizas y frutas. Aquí fue que conocí todo el proceso de la siembra y cosecha de la cebolla redonda tan importante en nuestra mesa.

Del semillero es arrancada la plántula cuando tiene unos 10 centímetros de crecimiento para ser trasplantada en la tierra donde va a crecer hasta su cosecha.

Durante su crecimiento es cuidada en el riego diario, se fumiga cada semana para que no le caiga ninguna plaga y al estar el vegetal en su tamaño ideal se le pasa una pipa como aplanadora para quebrar su tallo para que siga creciendo más. En dos semanas más está lista para ser arrancada de la tierra. Debe quitársele la raíz y las hojas para que quede solo el bulbo de la cebolla.

Todo este proceso se hace manualmente, no existe una máquina que haga este trabajo. Durante 6 meses se espera tener una buena cosecha de cebollas lista para poner en sacos de 10 kilos cada uno y poder tener un producto de calidad que compita con las otras cosechas del mercado.

Aprendí mucho durante este tiempo de este tipo de siembras y de las que se hacen en invernaderos, como el Tomate. Fue una experiencia inolvidable y un lugar maravilloso. Si tienen tiempo les aconsejo que vayan y visiten no solo la parte turística sino también la parte agrícola. Verán que no se arrepentirán.
