Sanzen-in, Kyoto: A Tranquil Two-Hour Stroll Amidst Soothing Verdancy
During this Kyoto sojourn, I finally checked off Sanzen-in Temple from my long-awaited list. Although a bit remote, the resulting respite and enchantment rendered the journey well worthwhile.
Navigate to: Ohara Sanzen-in.
From the city center, take a bus to the final stop, "Ohara Station," approximately a one-hour journey. Upon disembarking, a further 10-minute walk is required to reach Sanzen-in.
Admission: 700 yen per person
Once inside the temple grounds, one can order a bowl of tea and sit on the terrace to serenely appreciate the garden scenery. Alternatively, one can continue to wander leisurely, following the signposts.
Upon leaving the temple buildings and venturing outdoors, one immediately enters a world of Zen tranquility, characterized by towering ancient trees, verdant moss blanketing the landscape, and the gentle murmur of flowing water.
The weather on the day of my visit was especially delightful – clear blue skies, gentle breezes, and colossal trees swaying in the wind, emitting a crisp rustling sound, dappled sunlight… Strolling at a leisurely pace was utterly idyllic!
Searching for the small Jizo statues along the way proved to be incredibly engaging!
It is difficult to imagine the sheer beauty of Sanzen-in in autumn!
I encourage those planning a visit to allocate ample time to fully appreciate the experience. My visit occurred during the off-season, and many of the surrounding shops were not open. The summer holidays should bring greater activity. Upon completing your exploration, you can enjoy a satisfying lunch before departing.
