As believers today, our prayers shouldn't be a means of asking God for things but it should be an avenue to fellowship with Him through Christ.
That hits the nail on the head. It's about relationship. Prayer is a conversation with God. We listen, we speak, we listen some more. We should do more listening than speaking, and definitely more than requesting. If relationship isn't the center of prayer, then prayer is for naught.
