Crocheted Flower Coaster - 8 September 2025
I had another commission recently for a pair of crocheted coasters using light pink and white thread.

This project uses a 4.00mm crochet hook.
The photo above shows you the first row in white and the second row in light pink.
The design starts with 12 double crochet stitches into a ring of 4 chains. I didn’t use the ‘magic ring’ method because I found the thread to be a bit stiff and the stitches looked a bit off so the safest option was the ring made of 4 chains. The disadvantage of this type of centre is that you can see the hole more clearly. One way to close up the hole is to leave a tail of thread long enough to then run it through the stitches and pull.
I’m sure that I followed a pattern for my original coaster but I couldn’t find it anywhere so I had to improvise.

This coaster above is made with acrylic yarn.
The design includes a ‘special stitch’ called front post double crochet. I knew I had to distribute those stitches equally around the shape so luckily I could count the stitches on the photo above to see where to put it.
The second row doubles to 24 stitches, while consecutive rows increase every one, and then two stitches. The final row uses a combination of slipped stitches and increases in the middle stitch between the front post stitches to create that petal shape. It was good to be able to recreate this simple coaster.
I initially started using a 3.00mm crochet hook as you can see below with the yarn held double. It doesn’t show clearly, but I take the two ends of the ball to make up the double strand. This wasn’t difficult but as you can see under the project it can be a bit messy.

The photo below shows you the third row. By this point I’d changed to a 4mm crochet hook and had to unravel a couple of times to get the shape right.

When finished I hid all the threads by weaving in and out of the stitches nearby. I used a relatively 'pointy' craft needle that helped this process. This is a present that my friend who commissioned the coasters is giving to a friend of hers so it needs to look presentable.

The back of the work.
The two coasters looked very pretty.

Similar but not identical.
I put them into a plastic bag with some white backing card as you can see below :

I need to work on the presentation of finished objects but I’m happy with the outcome.
After struggling for a while 'distributing' those special stitches etc, I stumbled across this You Tube tutorial that is really what I needed in the first place :
The video is very clear so I'll be following this tutorial in the future instead of re-inventing the wheel.
Thank you for reading !
Hi friend 🤗 The coasters are cute! I like the floral motif. They look good in acrylic and wool, but I love them in pink. You always give us good feedback. Thanks for the tip! 👍😃
Hello @marito74. Glad you liked the coasters. The recipient apparently liked them a lot too. I'll make some extra to have in stock for unexpected presents 🧶
🤗💕👍
Thank you for the support @steemcurator09 / @sduttaskitchen !
