Cultural differences

Every country has its own culture, after travelling to multiple countries in the world I sometimes wonder how these different cultures have set into the society's region wise. For e.g. we can take on the broadest level the culture of East Vs West. The culture of west is more about individualism and personal freedom, whereas the eastern culture is all about collectivism and inclusiveness. There is no right or wrong about it, but sometimes setting into the culture of complete contrast can be challenging. Though these days the borders are getting closer and there is a wide integration of the cultures.

I still feel that a person like me who has always lived a life of inclusiveness could ever live in a western country permanently. Going for a holiday is one thing, but living is another. At my place we keep open doors to our neighbors, there is no formality of visiting each other's home. I enjoy the concept of living in joint families where the old and young all stay together and take care of each other. In the western world, it is minding your own business, for many years you may not know who is your neighbor. There is advantage to the way of personal freedom living also. You are not influenced by other people; you can make clear independent decisions for yourself. Life becomes simpler living in small family units.

When I shifted to Middle East, I did have a little bit of problem adjusting to their culture here, though it is not much different from what we have back home, after all it is the eastern region so there are lot of commonalties. But still, the people are different, their ways are different, so the approach of interactions do make a difference. As a human race we must have started with just one tribe, but as we grew and started spreading out in different parts of the world, we started building cultures as per our convenience.

Cultural differences are nothing but the boundaries we have set ourselves over centuries and now with globalization we may see these differences probably getting lesser over the years. The traditions are blending with each other. The west is enjoying th culture of the east and the east is enjoying the culture of the west and both of them are adapting to each other's ways of living. When people from western countries come to India they get mesmerized by the warmth and hospitality they get in our country. But for us it is very common, it is our way of life.

That's a different thing that the media shows a very different picture of our Country, but once you travel here you surely will be charmed not only by the warmth and hospitality but also with all the comfort and beauty of the land.

Yes, on the one hand, there is a difference between knowing and judging foreign cultures only from the media and experiencing them for yourself. On the other hand, however, it is also true that one is not strictly subject to one's own culture. Our own ideas and concepts, our own values – we could call this new cultures instead of tradition – help us move forward, not just the mixing of different cultures.

Absolutely, I believe that we should respect each other's way of life for what it is, there is no point of judging because there is no right or wrong
