Inspiration from a Porn Star
There are some cultures that consider being a porn star not an acceptable career choice. However, there are many individuals that defy the surroundings and manage to successfully take their career to new highs, in spite of the strong discouragement from various influencers around them. One such icon is Sunny Leone. Coming from a conservative South Asian family she is considered a successful Bollywood film star in India.
Being able to take herself to new highest is really remarkable. It is surprising to see the level of acceptance she has received within a community that is considered extremely conservative and family oriented, where even talking about sex in the open was considered unacceptable till some time back even in Indian metropolitan cities. The trend seems to be changing. It seems the culture in the large metros in India is becoming more open, at least towards the entertainment choices. There are family movies from Bollywood that feel having a song with Sunny Leone could drastically improve their films performance with the viewers.
Today, every successful movie in India seems to have a song considered explicit in the western world. However, such songs are becoming an important part of the screen play and are labeled watchable by kids with their parents. So, the kids are being prepared for a society where sensual content is felt acceptable, which might not be considered appropriate by many. However, that is exactly what seems to be happening today in India. It seems to be considered liberal and outward thinking in India when a family sits together and watches a sensual song together. The censer board (India’s equivalent to the Rating system) also seems to be promoting the concept of liberal viewership, as they provide a UA rating to a movie that could be consider a PG-13 or sometimes R for audiences in USA. Everything between G and R is given a rating of UA (Kids should be accompanied with parents) in India.
There seem to be two issues in this concept. One, the child always has to be dependent on the parent and cannot be expected to take their decision that is guided by the system. Second, the system seems to brush off their responsibility of providing guidance to kids and make the parents responsible completely for their child’s conduct.
Recently, there was a movie from Bollywood in which keeping a teenager captive till they turned 18+ was pictured as a way of redemption. It feels good to have examples like Sunny Leone to understand the increase in the level of acceptance within a community. HOWEVER, A SYSTEM’S ATTITUDE TOWARDS THEIR YOUTH IN TERMS OF PROVIDING GUIDANCE SEEMS TO BE DETERIORATING DAY BY DAY.
