Data protection and storing sensitive information

With technology getting in to almost every sector of life and everything getting digital there are logins almost for everything, and with that the major challenge is about remembering passwords and at the same time maintaining cyber security. As a family, my hubby and my son we share all our passwords with each other, just that sometimes there can be an emergency then we can access without any hassles. So it becomes all the more challenging to remember.

I have created a system for my home to keep a track of all our passwords but yes, they are not there on any of the electronic form, they are neither on phone or laptops. They are secured in a way where only 3 of us can access. And I update them once in a quarter, because there are some passwords which need to be changed once a quarter. Also, I do not believe to keep the same passwords and pin for all accounts. For every account, I would prefer to create a separate password, which is completely different and has not connection with one another to link.

But just securing passwords does not suffice data protection. There are lot of ways to hack these days. Some things I follow to keep myself secure are, I do not use mobile banking or have an app on my phone. Not that I am a millionaire but I still prefer to keep it safe and minimal, because these days the scams are at the peak and you never know in which form it can come. There are multiple ways for hackers and some are so unique that one cannot even imagine the way it is done. Setting google authenticator is also a good practice for the sensitive accounts. Safety needs to be maintained in every way. But again, as I mentioned, there is something developing every second day and it becomes challenging to be safe. Never open any link r attachment coming from any unreliable source. Disable to auto download feature on whatsapp for photographs and all documents. The more secure ways we identify, the hackers also develop equally. So while taking all the precautions still threat is always there.

Best way to retain the passwords is to store everything in the mind, but to be practical with so many logins it becomes difficult, and then some of the sites we do not regularly access, it can be once in a few months, so for those it all the more becomes challenging.
Do share some ideas on what are your ways of storing your sensitive information?

@nainaztengra, this is such a relevant and important topic! I love how you've addressed the password overload and the real anxieties around cybersecurity in a practical, family-oriented way. Your "offline" password system sounds incredibly secure and a testament to proactive thinking.

It's so true – simply having strong passwords isn't enough anymore. Your point about avoiding mobile banking apps and disabling auto-downloads is spot-on; those little habits can make a huge difference.

I'm definitely curious to hear what other Steemians do to stay secure. Thanks for sparking such a vital conversation! What strategies have proven most effective in your family's experience? I'm also curious if you use a password manager and what you think of them?
