Simple as Can Be | Arthur Morgan's Untold Adventures, Part 38

Since we dragged Trelawny out of the Braithwaites’ clutches, he had been staying with us in camp. I had not really talked to him since then. Truth is, I still wanted to know what he had been doing with those people and how they managed to catch him in the first place.

One afternoon I spotted him leaning against a tree like he had not a care in the world. I figured I would walk over and ask him straight. Before I could say a word, he looked up and asked me if I was busy. Now that was Trelawny through and through. Always one step ahead in conversation, always trying to set the tone before you could.

I gave him a look because I knew this was leading to somewhere. Then he leaned in and told me he had found something worth our time.

He asked if I had ever robbed a stagecoach. I laughed. Of course I had. He pressed me about what the real problem with them was. I told him plain: the armed guards trying to put a bullet in your head. He shook his head and said the real problem was the odds. Whether the risk balanced out with the take.

Then he offered to introduce me to a friend who could tell us which coaches were worth the trouble. I had my doubts, but I saddled up and rode along.

On the way, I asked how he ended up in these parts. He gave me some vague talk about commitments and expenses. He had been involved in a gold mining scheme that promised fine returns until the law ruined it for him. I could not help reminding him how he had vanished during that mess with Sean. He brushed it off, saying everyone played to their strengths. Typical Trelawny answer.

We reached Rhodes Station and he told me to let him do the talking. I said, alright. Inside, he greeted the clerk, Alden, like an old friend. Trelawny called him a “discouraged man”, and introduced me like I was part of some secret circle.

Then we slipped him a “little gift”, you know, and just like that Alden opened up. He told us about a coach heading south along the river road through Siltwater Strand. Said we could even find another contact named Hector out in Strawberry. Trelawny bowed like an actor leaving a stage, while I shook my head at the show.

Outside, he led me to a quiet spot by the road and laid out the plan. He would distract the passengers, and I would sneak to the strongbox. He gave me a lockpick and told me I could always fall back on my guns if things went bad.

The coach showed up right on time. Trelawny strolled up to it cheerful as ever, striking up a conversation with a singer named Miss Damsen.

Before long he had her singing right there by the roadside. Typical Trelawny again. And while she carried her tune, I slipped to the back, opened the strongbox, and lifted what we came for. It was almost too easy.

When it was over, Trelawny finished his act, bowed again, and apologized to the passengers before sending them on their way. We regrouped and he congratulated me.

I told him it was his performance that made it work. He laughed, called it teamwork, and pocketed his share when I handed it over.

Before we split, he told me to keep visiting Alden from time to time. Then he rode off like he always did, full of flair and mystery, leaving me wondering once more how I had ever ended up mixed in with a man like him.

Disclaimer

Arthur Morgan and the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 might be fictional creations by Rockstar Games, but my love for this game? 100% real. This is a new kind of adventure I wanted to bring to Steemit. I’m narrating the story of RDR2 from the perspective of its protagonist, Arthur Morgan, offering a fresh and immersive take on his journey. Rather than directly copying the game’s dialogues, I’m weaving Arthur’s emotions and experiences into a creative and fictional retelling. You can also experience this story in a cinematic way. I play the game, record my gameplay, edit the footage in the best possible way, and upload it to my YouTube channel. This way, after reading each story episode, you can watch it unfold like a movie.
