I needed screws. The fakir said: ‘You need clarity.’

We went to Obi.

He entered the shop as if it were a temple. Looked at every jigsaw like an old soul. He stopped at the wall with the dowels. ‘See how they are silent? They know they hold everything you can't hold yourself.'

Me: ‘I just need something to put my shelf on.’ Him: ‘A shelf is a place for things you really don't need but can't let go of.’ Me: ‘Yes, that's exactly why I'm building it.’

Suddenly, using a folding rule, parcel tape and mental concentration, he built a functioning wall shelf. Without a wall. I didn't ask and bought screws anyway.

At home: the shelf holds - but only if the fakir is sitting next to it.

Ich brauchte Schrauben. Der Fakir sagte: „Du brauchst Klarheit.“

Wir gingen zu Obi.

Er betrat das Geschäft, als wäre es ein Tempel. Betrachtete jede Stichsäge wie eine alte Seele. An der Wand mit den Dübeln blieb er stehen. „Siehst Du, wie sie still schweigen? Sie wissen, daß sie all das halten, was Du nicht halten kannst.“

Ich: „Ich brauche nur was, um mein Regal anzubringen.“ Er: „Ein Regal ist ein Ort für Dinge, die Du wirklich nicht brauchst, aber nicht loslassen kannst.“ Ich: „Ja, genau deshalb baue ich’s.“

Plötzlich zimmerte er aus Zollstock, Paketband und mentaler Konzentration ein funktionierendes Wandregal. Ohne Wand. Ich fragte nicht und kaufte trotzdem Schrauben.

Zuhause: Regal hält – aber nur wenn der Fakir daneben sitzt.
