Singha durbar

Singha Durbar is one of the most important political and administrative landmarks of Nepal. Located in the heart of Kathmandu, this historic palace was originally built in 1908 by Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher JBR. At that time, it was considered one of the largest and most luxurious palaces in Asia, showcasing the power, wealth, and architectural grandeur of the Rana dynasty.

The palace complex was constructed in a neoclassical style, inspired by European architecture, with grand halls, lavish courtyards, and beautiful decorations. It once served as the private residence of the Rana rulers, who controlled Nepal’s politics for more than a century.

After the fall of the Rana regime in 1951, Singha Durbar was transformed into the official seat of the Government of Nepal. Since then, it has housed major government offices, including the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. It became the symbol of governance and decision-making in Nepal, much like the “White House” in the USA or “10 Downing Street” in the UK.

Over the years, parts of Singha Durbar were damaged by fire incidents and the 2015 earthquake, but restoration works have been ongoing to preserve its historical and political significance. Even today, it stands as a central hub of Nepal’s administration and a reminder of the country’s political transformation—from autocratic Rana rule to democracy.
