GULF OF DARK

PLUNGED in a gulf of dark despair
We wretched siniiers lay,
Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimfnering day.

And I praise with firmer faith
Christ who vanquished pain and death;
And to Christ enthroned above
Raise my song of selfless

We read thee best in Him who came
To bear for us the Cross of shame,
Sent by the Father from on high,
Our life to live, our death to die.
