7 AND THE LORD SAID TO SAMUEL, “HEED THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IN ALL THAT THEY SAY TO YOU; FOR THEY HAVE NOT REJECTED YOU, BUT THEY HAVE REJECTED ME, THAT I SHOULD NOT REIGN OVER THEM.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also.”
1 Samuel 8:7,8 (NKJV)

Through the above passage of the Bible, a believer can ignorantly reject God, ease God out of his or her life.
The Israelites rejected God, took His hands off on their matter, through the request they made by asking for a king.

If a believer had not fully consecrated his or her life to God completely and be submissive unwaveringly; such would still want to rule or direct certain aspects or departments of their lives—they would not give the total rulership or control of their lives to God.
In the Israelites issue, they wanted to be like other nations. Likewise, a believer might be craving or desiring to be like some other people; either like other carnal believers or unbelievers.
When a believer permitted this, It is easy for him or her to stray or deviate from the core or original plan of God for his or her life.
When you are comparing your life with that of others, It shows that you are not wise, your wisdom is not full, according to the Scripture (2 Corinthians 10:12).

When this happened, the believer has started rejecting God; such is no longer seeing God's counsel and wisdom as valid and final. Such a believer has started coveting or wanting to be like others.
Learning and emulating others might not be outrightly bad, but whoever you are learning from or emulating should be someone who is closely following Christ Jesus. If you are trying to learn, copy or emulate someone who is worldly, though claimed to be godly, you cannot but be strayed from God's plan or His intended will or programme for your life.
Thus, whoever you are learning from or emulating, make sure the person is following Christ Jesus closely; If such deviated, even a little, do not follow that.
The truth is, Christ Jesus is the perfect standard whom a believer should learn from and emulate without any reservation: "LOOKING UNTO JESUS, THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH, WHO FOR THE JOY THAT WAS SET BEFORE HIM ENDURED THE CROSS, DESPISING THE SHAME, AND HAS SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE THRONE OF GOD" (Hebrews 12:2 NKJV).
Peace.
