"AND this is what he says to all humanity: 'THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS TRUE WISDOM; TO FORSAKE EVIL IS REAL UNDERSTANDING."
Job 28:28 (NLT)

• Wisdom is found in God, and only those who fear Him would have it.

  • God gives wisdom to those who love Him.
  • If you love God you will reverentially fear Him. Whoever you love, you would want to reverence.
  • God would reveal Himself to those who reverentially fear Him, His secret would be made known to them: "THE SECRET OF THE LORD IS WITH THOSE WHO FEAR HIM, AND HE WILL SHOW THEM HIS COVENANT (Psalm 25:14 NKJV).
  • Someone who lives in rebellion, though claimed to be a believer, would not have any access to the secret of the Kingdom.
  • Doing God's Will, obeying His commands or instructions would give you an access to His wisdom and other secrets of the Kingdom which ordinarily would not have been made known to you.
  • Submission and obedience to God's instructions give you wisdom. When you obeyed God, the results you have would show that you had gotten wisdom.
  • One would know a wise person through what he or she does with what they have. The resources channel through you, what you do with them, shows the quality or greatness of your wisdom.

• The second part of our text says to forsake evil is real understanding.

  • Someone who engages not in evil is a person of great understanding. If you shut your eyes to the enticements to do wrong or evil, you are a man or woman of wisdom and understanding (Daniel 1:8).
  • An evil is the general term of sin. Thus, to forsake sin is real understanding. Sin is a bait which Satan uses to lure the believers away from God's protection.
  • The understanding of whoever lives in sin is always blurred and darkened. Someone who lives in sin cannot see clearly. The eyes of understanding of such is shut.
  • It is the Holy Spirit Who opens the eyes of understanding of whoever is of God. Such is shown the wondrous things of God's Kingdom.
  • The eyes of understanding of a believer is enlightened by prayers through the help of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:17,18).
  • Thus, If someone's eyes of understanding, the mind, is covered or veiled by the devil, It would be difficult for him or her to receive whatever God has for them:
3 "BUT EVEN IF OUR GOSPEL IS VEILED, IT IS VEILED TO THOSE WHO ARE PERISHING, 4 WHOSE MINDS THE god OF THIS AGE HAS BLINDED, WHO DO NOT BELIEVE, LEST THE LIGHT OF THE GOSPEL OF THE GLORY OF CHRIST, WHO IS THE IMAGE OF GOD, SHOULD SHINE ON THEM" (2 Corinthians 4:3,4 NKJV).
  • A person whose mind is veiled would not see things as he or she supposed to. Sin is used to cover the mind and prevent the truth from being made known to the person who engages in it. Such is kept in darkness and bondage by the devil.
  • A mind that is not renewed and submitted to the Holy Spirit would not access—step into or set foot in—whatever God through the Holy Spirit, wanted to be made known to such a believer (Romans 12:2).

• Since the mind is not regenerated at the new birth, It remains dirty, thus, a renewal process is needed which could be termed as the saving of the soul or mind: "THEREFORE LAY ASIDE ALL FILTHINESS AND OVERFLOW OF WICKEDNESS, AND RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE IMPLANTED WORD, WHICH IS ABLE TO SAVE YOUR SOUL" (James 1:21 NKJV).

  • The soul which comprises of; will, mind, and emotion, is saved through the Word of God. This saving of soul is also referred to as renewing of mind in the Book of Romans 12:2.
  • The Greek word translated soul in James 1:21 is psychē. It means breath, or a sentient being. This also is used for animal's souls. But here in the passage, It was being referred to as the human nature.
  • The process of the renewing or saving of the soul or mind would be in two stages:
    A. Your human nature, or your soul which comprises of Will, mind and emotion had to be saved, or renewed.
Be separated from the flesh; lustfulness or sinful passions, through mortification (Colossians 3:5).
    B. After the first part is done, you had to submit the soul or mind to the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
